The Obama Plot for a Carbon Tax

obama.org

Robert Reich: Tuesday night, President Obama did not call for a tax on carbon. He didn’t even ask the Senate to pass the cap-and-trade legislation that emerged from the House. Instead, he said there were lots of good ideas out there and he’s willing to consider any of them — which seemed more like a way of declaring cap-and-trade dead.

A Tribute to Fathers and Children Forever Separated

black father and son

David Love: another designated enemy.

Men who cannot be with their children, and people who are separated from their fathers might not be in the mood to celebrate Father’s Day, and that is okay. What is important is that we learn to honor and remember those we love when they are not or cannot be with us now or ever. And you don’t need a special day for that.

Carl Sandburg’s Wisdom through Humor

carl sandburg

Walter G. Moss: Wise person that he was, Sandburg saw that life is both a comedy and tragedy, containing vibrant life and sad death, the beautiful and the ugly, the wise and the foolish, moments of transcendence and ones of banality. As the Bible’s book of Ecclesiastes says (and Sandburg admirer Pete Seeger later adapted for his folk song “Turn, Turn, Turn”)

Deporting America’s Future: Harvard Student Pushes for DREAM Act

graduating latino student

Seth Hoy: Harvard sophomore, Eric Balderas, knows why the DREAM Act is important to so many. Earlier this month, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) picked up Balderas in Boston on his way to visit his mother in San Antonio, Texas. Balderas now faces the possibility of deportation at a hearing next month. The 19-year-old biology major was valedictorian of his high school class and is on a full scholarship at Harvard.

An Exclusive (Somewhat Apocryphal) Interview with Stephen Hawking on the British Petroleum Gulf Oil Spill Event Horizon

stephen hawking

Gary Corseri: All this nambypambyism about the BP Oil Spill has got me down, so I figured I’d go to the smartest guy on the planet to get his what’s what. I met Stephen Hawking at his perch at the Mt. Palomar observatory.

Chris Matthews Nails It

obama sucks

Tom Degan: Let’s face some serious facts here, boys and girls: The right wing in this country has always been (since the days of the Confederacy and before) a tad crazy — not to mention dumber than doggy doo doo. What is happening to them now is beyond anything in their long and entertainingly weird history. In effect they’ve totally lost it.

Magic in Business and Government

big oil

Jim Fuller: Take it from a guy who spent decades reporting for magazines and major newspapers on both government agencies and businesses of all sizes, up to and including giant international corporations: You seldom will encounter a government bureaucracy as inefficient and hidebound as that of a typical giant corporation, nor will you ever run into a government bureaucrat so out of touch with the world most of us live in as anyone who lives within the top four or five layers of corporate leadership.

Bottlenose Dolphin Teeth, British Petroleum PR, and Reality on the Mississippi Delta

Image BP presented to Houma community regarding beach clean-up

Georgianne Nienaber: There is a deep distrust of anything British Petroleum has to say here in south Louisiana, and the President’s claim that 90 percent of the flow will be stopped by the middle of July is being roundly criticized. If the number came from BP, there is good reason to be incredulous.

Border Crossers Shot at in Arizona: Attackers U.S. Citizens?

el paso border

According to reports, a group of undocumented border crossers were shot at by two men wearing camouflage using high-powered rifles.

Falling For Feldenkrais: A Patient’s Progress

Moshe Feldenkrais

Michael Sigman: For an obsessive swimmer who craves the endorphins, the past two years of failed therapies for a bum shoulder have been a bummer. I’ve been acupunctured, acupressured, cracked, Rolfed, electro-stimulated, nutritionized, lasered, therapized, osteopathed, hypnotized, rheumatologized, cortisoned, massaged, medicated, iced, heated, surgerized and more. Much more.

Obama’s “Fireside Chat” (FDR or Jimmy Carter?)

Joseph Palermo: Tuesday night President Obama explained how his administration is going to respond to the most devastating human-made ecological catastrophe in the nation’s history. But he apparently doesn’t recognize how overwhelmingly popular it would be right now with the American people if he came out swinging against the malefactors of great corporate wealth like BP (or Goldman Sachs).

Friday Feedback: Guest Worker Program?

Friday FeedbacK: Although somewhat unfair, initially the Guest Worker Program would be filled with all the current illegal immigrant workers now in the US. Families residing with them would remain here until the visa time limit was reached. Then all would return to their country of origin.

Juneteenth, Father’s Day, and Happy Black Men

Peter J. Harris

Peter Harris is interested in knowing how Black men define happiness. Says Harris, “Black men were brought to America to make others happy and then die! Thomas Jefferson didn’t have Black men in mind when he drafted the Declaration of Independence. A happy Black man, given our American journey, is the ultimate avant garde. . .”

George Lakoff’s Majority Vote Budget Initiative
