Tom Hayden: Peace advocates should unite in demanding that President Obama decide to announce a significant troop withdrawal from Afghanistan beginning this July. Together we can push toward a significant de-escalation of this war.

Steve Ybarra: Tell the Republicants that the 1.775, 389 registered Spanish-surnamed Democratic voters condemn this petty, cowardly attack on our President.

Ivan Eland: Weapons purchases are often welfare projects doled out to congressional districts and states with political clout. In fact, unlike in the commercial market, defense contractors don’t give subcontracts to the best subcontractors but spread them around the country to build political support, so that it is very difficult to kill weapons programs.

Rev. Irene Monroe: Queer Civil War buffs have been arguing for some time that the deafening silence around lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Confederate and Union soldiers indicates proof of their very presence.
Lee Fang: Corporate coercion of employees is perhaps the most profound repercussion from the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision last year.

Marian Wang: When the Deepwater Horizon disaster killed 11 men at sea last April and set off the worst oil spill in U.S. history, the tragedy exposed a number of weaknesses—not least of which were decades-old laws that limited the liability of major players.

Michele Waslin: While passage of comprehensive immigration reform is certainly necessary to fix the outdated and dysfunctional legal immigration system, there is much more that the President can do now

David Love: Given the paucity of positive images of Arabs out there, no single film can be all things to all people. And no film by itself can articulate the full breadth of the occupation or the Mideast conflict. But this is a good start.

Seth Hoy: One of the biggest myths perpetuated by restrictionist groups is that the roughly 12 million unauthorized immigrants currently living in the U.S. use a variety of public services yet paying nothing in taxes.

Steve Hochstadt: These opportunist birthers don’t believe in anything, except that they can promote conservative causes and their own public profile by doubting the facts.

Andrea Nill: The creation of only one new Latino district in a state where Latinos are driving population growth and will soon be the majority amounts to anything short of Republican gerrymandering.

Tina Dupuy: Republicans claim to be the arbiters of fiscal discipline, but their record says otherwise. The Ryan Plan, which passed the House, was like a cat burglar writing the charter for the neighborhood watch.

Robert Reich: Monday Standard & Poor’s (hardly a beacon of reliability after the Crash of 2008, to be sure) downgraded America’s credit outlook. Expect more downgrades if the game of chicken continues.

Randy Shaw: Obama’s history includes many great speeches advocating for “change we can believe in,” but as even his most fervid admirers acknowledge, his governance has been quite different.

LGBT Issues for Breakfast
Carl Matthes: Aren’t we all tired of looking to the Bible for condemnation of the human condition? Aren’t we ready to be adults and accept, that with all aspects of life, there is diversity?
