Arnold Schwarzennegger and Maria Shriver Separate

Maria Shriver, wife of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, and her mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, leave the inaugural kick-off at Sacramento's Capitol Park.

The former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzennegger and his wife, Maria Shriver have announced that they have separated. In a statement they jointly released, the pair said, “After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship,” they say in a joint statement.

In an article published by the Los Angeles Times, Schwarzenneger and Shriver said, “This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us.” Although they were not specific about the transitions they were referring to, most know of the recent passing of Ms. Shriver’s father, Sargent Shriver as well as the death of her mother Eunice Kennedy Shriver in August 2009.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver were married 25 years ago. They shared a home in Brentwood but it is being reported that Shriver has moved out of that home, and the two are in the process of deciding their next steps.

The couple has four children. They announced that they plan to parent the children together.  Speaking of the children they said,  “They are the light and the center of both of our lives. We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment. We ask for compassion and respect from the media and the public.”

After leaving office, Schwarzenegger quickly stepped back into the Hollywood scene, signing on to star in the drama Cry Macho.  It has been reported that his representatives are shopping a package for a new Terminator sequel and he has partnered with Stan Lee on a Governator comic and animated series, with plans for a movie as well.

Maria Shriver runs a women’s empowerment website and served as a guest editor on an issue of Oprah Winfrey’s magazine, O.
