Georgianne Nienaber: There is a crisis right now in Haiti and everyone is aware of it. Anyone who is following the election knows exactly what is going on, and it is not a number problem.

Georgianne Nienaber: Martelly talked about the electoral process, the meaning of democracy, the profound challenges facing Haiti, the controversial United Nations presence, and how his flamboyant past sometimes “haunts” him as he seeks the Presidency.

Georgianne Nienaber: The Disaster Accountability Project (DAP) released an online petition Friday, targeting leaders of major disaster relief and aid organizations for failing to do more to prevent the cholera outbreak in Haiti

Twitter Cholera Confusion in Haiti: Was NGO Apology Necessary?

hati cholera outbreak

Georgianne Nienaber: In retrospect, the inadvertent mix-up in the Twitter account of the geographical locations LaGonave and Gonaive is completely understandable. The fact that it caused such a flurry in Haiti and enraged an epidemiological NGO competing for the same slice of the funding pie–is unfortunate and speaks to a deeper disconnect and lack of trust.

Haiti: Ground Truthing Cholera in Mirebalais

Time to Rebrand Haiti’s Tent Cities as Tomas Approaches

haiti

Georgianne Nienaber: Haiti’s Potemkin village, the Camp Corail-Cesselesse relocation camp, is not safe. With the approach of Tomas, which is morphing daily from tropical storm to hurricane and back again, Haitian officials are urging the 7,850 residents of its flagship camp to evacuate and “find different locations.”

Haiti: Cholera Outbreak Metaphor for No Accountability

Georgianne Nienaber: It will be astounding to see the media coverage of this event, should it unfold in all its potential horror, but where has the media been since the six-month anniversary in July?

War Criminal Ntaganda and Rwandan Security Agents Accused of Assassinations

Georgianne Nienaber: In the months prior to his assassination, Balibuno had repeatedly told Human Rights Watch and others that he was threatened by Ntaganda for refusing to support Ntaganda’s leadership of the CNDP.

Mary Landrieu Goes to Bat for Louisiana’s Wetlands

2010-09-28-atrisk

Georgianne Nienaber: Landrieu did not mince words, blaming the federal government for malfeasance and mismanagement of a delicate ecosystem that has placed the Mississippi River Delta at “extreme risk of complete and utter collapse.”

Congo: More Intimidation as Blood Flows Faster than Oil Spilled into the Gulf of Mexico

congo-1

Georgianne Nienaber: The United States has strategic and mining interests in DRC and until the American people wake up and demand that our government do something to actually promote human rights in the Great Lakes Region, we can expect more of the same and press release after press release from Human Rights organizations will swarm foreign news desks like so many hyenas after the kill.

What’s the Deal With the Water in Orange Beach Alabama?

2010-08-26-ob1

Georgianne Nienaber: There is no doubt that BP lied about the amount of oil being spewed into the Gulf of Mexico from Day One, no doubt that the EPA has obfuscated issues surrounding the use of the chemical dispersant, Corexit, and no doubt that bloggers have gone entirely beyond the tenets of responsible journalism.

Bill Clinton Puts Influential Muscle Behind Agricultural Production in Haiti

Georgianne Nienaber: Given the huge remaining humanitarian and economic crisis facing Haiti, it is puzzling that mainstream media in the United States short-changed coverage of former President Bill Clinton’s early August visit to Leogane. The symbolism is significant, considering that Leogane and the nearby village of Fayette are at the epicenter of the 7.0 quake.

Gulf’s Dolphins: “Man Needs To Make Right Their Waters”

Georgianne Nienaber: Scientists suggest that it will be many years before we know the full extent of the disaster, and are wary of reporters since the media ends up misquoting them or distorting the facts. It is not so much media bias as it is lack of scientific training on the part of journalists and bloggers.

Where’s the Oil? Here, There, and Everywhere

Thick oil is revealed on the beach at Grand Isle's State Park after clean up crews use an auger to take 30 inch deep core samples that show oil from the deepwater horizon oil spill exists on several levels beneath the sand.

Georgianne Nienaber: The world faces the difficult challenge of understanding exactly what has happened to the ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico in the uncertainty of the aftermath of the April 20 explosion of the BP Macondo wellhead.

Georgianne Nienaber: Is the Obama administration and BP engaging in politics and PR with a dangerous twist?

Fishing and Breathing BP’s Oil: What’s “Safe?”

Georgianne Nienaber: o one knows for certain what are “safe” levels of dispersants, oil, and VOCs in the air and water. There was no baseline to begin with, agencies are overlapping or not doing their jobs, and there are still 80 days worth of oil and dispersants in the Gulf to contend with.

BP’s Oiled Pelicans: “They Look Like Dead Angels in the Sand”

Georgianne Nienaber: Rehabilitation of wildlife has become a moneymaking government enabled bureaucracy with a bunch of federal sock-puppets taking orders from BP.

Report Questions NGO Accountability in Haiti

Leogane in May

Georgianne Nienaber: A new report by the Disaster Accountability Project (DAP), there is a “shocking lack of transparency” by relief organizations that have received upwards of $1.3 billion for Haiti aid.

Winona LaDuke Pledges Help for Native Tribes Facing BP Oil

Winona LaDuke at White Earth Reservation

Georgianne Nienaber: LaDuke slammed the Minnesota Ottertail Power Company for being “punitive” in its refusal to allow the White Earth Recovery Project to supply its own power and have some to sell to the rest of the grid. Minnesota has the strictest electrical inspection standards in the United States.

EPA, Coast Guard, and BP PR Tied to Airborne Corexit Denials

gulf spill map

Georgianne Nienaber: So, dispersants are clearly present in the air, both over sea and land. If Unified Command is suggesting that oil spill responders might want to reconsider using respirators, why have we been told by the EPA, at a press conference, that there are no dispersants in the air?

Facing the Future as a Media Felon on the Gulf Coast

Georgianne Nienaber: The United States Coast Guard considers me a felon now, because I “willfully” want to obtain more photos like these to show you the utter devastation occurring in Barataria Bay, Louisiana as a result of the BP oil catastrophe.

Media Contributes to Victim Mentality as Gulf Struggles

Grand Bayou, Louisiana, at risk

Georgianne Nienaber: Journalists have a responsibility to examine the science and it will not be easy. The public has a responsibility to learn more about their environment. It is obvious that government is not looking out for Gulf Coast residents. Communities will be forced to step in and do independent monitoring.

Oil-Soaked Dolphins Struggle in Lousiana’s Barataria Bay

Barataria-1

Georgianne Nienaber: Toxic poisons are stalking the dolphins in Barataria Bay, Louisiana, and no one is discussing or reporting the fact that the oiled mammals are struggling in the waters near Grand Terre Island. There are no published photos or videos that we have been able to find, and no stories that describe the oil-encrusted dorsal fins and odd behavior that suggest an under-reported or deliberately hidden environmental catastrophe.

Bottlenose Dolphin Teeth, British Petroleum PR, and Reality on the Mississippi Delta

Image BP presented to Houma community regarding beach clean-up

Georgianne Nienaber: There is a deep distrust of anything British Petroleum has to say here in south Louisiana, and the President’s claim that 90 percent of the flow will be stopped by the middle of July is being roundly criticized. If the number came from BP, there is good reason to be incredulous.

British Petroleum Rebuffs Better Boom Barrier

Abandoned, worthless sausage (absorbent) boom

Georgianne Nienaber: The boom material used by British Petroleum to contain the massive river of oil that it flowing into the Gulf of Mexico is not working. So, ask yourself why BP is unwilling to use a product that seems far superior to the bloated, filthy, broken “sausage” absorbent boom that is washing up along miles of sensitive marshlands on the Louisiana Coast.
