Conservatives in 2013

conservatives in 2013In 2012, conservatives lost the Presidency plus seats in the Senate and House. They see America changing and, wIthout a national leader, conservatives have splintered.

To wit:

Armed conservatives, protected by the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre, are showing a particularly ugly face to America in response to the Newtown shooting. LaPierre said, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” LaPierre demands that “armed police officers to be posted in every American school to stop the next killer ‘waiting in the wings.’” And, the NRA has money to burn. While too many Americans feel unsafe from guns, too many Congressmembers feel unsafe from the NRA.

Gun sales have tripled since Newtown. Speaker Boehner said that he would take the recommendations from Joe Biden’s commission on gun control “under advisement.” Translation: study, stall and stifle gun control legislation.

Misogynistic conservatives love the all-male Iowa Supreme Court which decided recently that “a dentist acted legally when he fired an assistant that he found attractive simply because he and his wife viewed the woman as a threat to their marriage!” The court ruled 7-0 that bosses can fire “irresistibly attractive employees” even if the employees have not engaged in flirtatious behavior…”  Femalephobia is rampant around birth control and abortion. Is that guy using a condom with his wife? Check out that woman who was raped. No doubt the Iowa Supreme Court could find that there is no such thing as rape, i.e., just having a vagina could make the woman “irresistibly attractive.”

Personhood conservatives believe that life begins at conception. Destroying even a just inseminated egg is tantamount to murder. As conservative Rep Paul Ryan outlined: “Each human life begins with fertilization, cloning, or its functional equivalent, at which time every human has all legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood.”

The business conservative wants a growing bottom line without government intervention. These guys have finally found respect for the United Nations! A United Nations of Workers, that is. A giant global labor force where workers – American, Chinese, Bangladeshi, et al – receive identical benefits and pay.

The SuperPac/Media conservative believes that political campaigns deserve unfettered amounts of money. Since a billion dollars didn’t work in 2012, they will want two billion next time. They want well-paid operatives running PACs while their media parrots at FOX News, and radio entertainers like Limbaugh, ad nauseum, continue spreading misinformation, hate and fear.

The conservative Faithful believe that America is a Christian nation which should dominate the courthouse and government. They want a Constitutional amendment to  deny equal rights to lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and the transgendered. They resist inclusion of gay men and lesbians in the military and support the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). While persons of Faith are free to choose their religion, the Constitution demands respect and equality for  everyone.

True American conservatives believe that President Obama is not an American and that immigrants need to be deported. The NRA would be in charge of borders and armed school security guards would check student citizenship status. Only True Americans would be allowed to vote with armed precinct workers having the final word on who qualifies.

Southern racist conservatives were the backbone of the pre-1964 Democratic Solid South. They bolted the party when Democratic Presidents Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson pursued equality for African Americans. In 1964, anti-civil rights conservative GOP presidential candidate Barry Goldwater won five states of the Solid South. Republican President Richard Nixon built on that victory and forged the GOP Solid South. Today, conservatives desire diversity as window dressing, not as heartfelt policy.

Anti-government conservatives have targeted Social Security and Medicare for extinction. They want to save it by “fixing it.” Their hate for Social Security goes back to 1935 when Democratic President Franklin Roosevelt signed it into law. Medicare dates to 1965 under Democratic President Lyndon Johnson. Conservatives want to issue vouchers, invest SS funds in the stock market, change the formulae for payments and increases plus sell the idea that anyone who receives benefits are in fact “takers, moochers, welfare queens, victims, et al.” In addition, this same crowd is fighting President Obama over Medicare negotiating with drug companies for low prices. The President said recently, “We will cut spending on prescription drugs by using Medicare’s purchasing power to drive greater efficiency and speed generic brands of medicine onto the market.”

carl matthesConservatives are fighting for the driver seat of one of America’s dominant political parties. While it’s important for America to have two vibrant parties, conservative’s ideas were dismissed by America’s voters. Now, Liberal and Progressive ideas are gaining traction and, as we enter 2013, the nation is hopeful.
