This month’s forum — Friday, March 14th, 2014, at 7:30 a.m. — features a SERIOUS discussion on the foremost issue facing black men and urban youth in America today: Abuse and Deadly Force under the “Color of Authority” and/or the cover of law.
This forum, a year in the making, comes as we discuss what has occurred since the killing of Trayvon Martin two years ago, the residual effects of the Christopher Dorner manifesto incident a year ago and the fallout over the abusive arrest of a Superior Court Judge in Westwood just a few months ago.
Each tragic event started with incidents stemming from abuse under the color of authority. Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis were killed because “the law” (Stand Your Ground) condoned it. Why is this continuing to occur, and what can be done about it?
Join us as we welcome a panel of distinguished law enforcement attorneys, experts and authors who have been astute observers of this national rise in deadly aggression by law enforcement, and by the public. Our panel discussion participants are:
- Famed Civil Rights Attorney, Carl Douglas, Esq.
- Attorney/Legal Expert and Author of a new book on the Trayvon Martin Trial, Lisa Bloom, Esq.
- Author/Retired LAPD Sergeant, Cheryl Dorsey
This forum will focus on the perpetuation of deadly force and public aggression in American society and why situations like Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis continue to occur. Do modern day laws now condone and even inspire acts of extreme and deadly force? Is it a new culture trend or an individual mindset? Does race play into these situations, or has society justifiably taken a hardline stand by legalizing acts of “death by fear?”
Most importantly, what can be done about it? How do we go about changing this shift of law AND culture?
The forum will be held:
