“Hurray! Congress Is to Adjourn!”

mark twainThus said American humorist Mark Twain in 1866. The rest of what he said is: “Only four more days of Congressional burglary on our Treasury!” Not much has changed in nearly 150 years, as we have witnessed American democracy practiced at its worst in the halls of Congress over the past few weeks.

“No man’s life, liberty or property are safe while the Congress is in session.” -Mark Twain

Seventy or eighty arch-conservative Tea Party members of the House and Senate have held this country hostage to their right-wing demands that we sacrifice entitlements belonging to ordinary, hard working Americans for the benefit of their rich friends. What is the mood of the ordinary American? Disgust.

“Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But then I repeat myself.” – Mark Twain

Now that the country will be safe from Congress for at least a month, until after Labor Day, when they reconvene, California Progressives can focus on those Republican Members of Congress elected from our fair state. The next month or so would be an ideal time to give them a piece of our collective minds, as they return home to hold town halls in their districts, to go on expensive foreign junkets, to spend time with their wives and children (or mistresses), or to try to determine if they still have a district to run in after the looming reapportionment kicks in next year.

“The country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer.” – Mark Twain

ted vaillNow your job is to contact these Republican Congressmen and women and let them know how you feel about what they have done in Congress this year. Visit their field or D.C. offices and town hall meetings, or e-mail, call, fax or twitter them. Make them hunger to get back to Washington to try to do more damage to the American economy.

  1. Wow! Your reasoning and outrage is so rational! Let’s see 15 of 17 Republicans voted to PASS THE DEBT CEILING INCREASE! Damn them all you say! Go beat up on them! Use their religion as a club!!

Huh? You won – they caved and voted the largest increase in the debt ceiling EVER which will keep us on a path to $24Trillion national debt by 2022 and achieving a national debt greater than our GDP this year. The rating agencies said we needed $4Trillion in credible cuts to avoid a down rating and what did the left demand? Increased spending! Yeah, that’s the ticket. We have have dodged the down rating bullet for the moment but it IS coming – have no doubt about that.

You should be celebrating these “statesmen” for going along to get along. They all signed on to the fiscal suicide pack demanded by Obama, Reid and Pelosi. Congratulations – no cuts to entitlements (not a penny!) and Obama’s demand for new taxes will be fulfilled in the November committee decision.

Another pathetic example of partisan outrage just for the sake of outrage.
