This is some slow typing, because I have to pause every sentence or two, and wipe tears out of my eyes. Tom, you have re-opened a gaping hole in my heart that took decades to grow and more decades to scab over. We DID believe, didn't we? We DID act on those beliefs, didn't we? And we DID make some headway..............didn't we?
And yet, somehow we failed to heed Ike's warning well enough to contain the Leviathan that is the Military-Industrial Complex. We stood on the moon and it was boring, so we found more juice in the business of genocide. The Leviathan doesn't care whether it's selling arms to our putative enemies or friends (preferabley both) or to our own national war machine. As long as the mill keeps running, the cannons have fodder and the puppeteers can ride roughshod on a willing population of drones. The good people of our nation have been made to 'feel good about ourselves' by the grandfatherly likes of the Gipper, to be proud of the death, waste, hatred and turmoil that arise from our flailing manically at any person or institution that does not bow to our automatic superiority. As long as we keep ogling the red herrings, we'll never see the root causes of our dissatisfaction and dissolution.
We're a great bastion of Capitalism, until the most central institutions of that economy are found to be hollow. Then instead of letting them fall where they fail, we want to preserve the convenience of mindlessly bumbling on deeper into debt (St. Peter don't you call me...I owe my soul to the Company Store) and we prefer corporate welfare to the welfare of the people.
Enough of my wailing and preaching, though. Let me just say AMEN and THANK YOU, and:
We did it before, we're doing it again, and if we keep our eyes and our minds and our hearts open, we may make it stick longer this time around.
