What Was the Top News Story of 2009
Ten years ago, at about this time, we were experiencing various degrees of concern over Y2K. People were stocking up on canned goods, filling up their gas tanks, withdrawing money from bank accounts, even stocking up on that all-purpose duct tape for reasons that are beyond us. But shortly after we ushered in the new millennium, we found that the nightmare many forecasted was not to be.
Turns out there was a nightmare on the horizon; it just had nothing to do with Y2K. Unfortunately, the selection of George W. Bush and the domino affect it’s had on our country and our world is still with us.
Ten years ago, the story dominating the headlines was Y2K. In 2009, according to Yahoo, the story that dominated in terms of searches online was — wait for it — Michael Jackson’s death! Not the economic meltdown, not the healthcare debate, not even the inauguration of the first black president of the United States!

I have come to believe that the most memorable event in the history of the past Decade, would have had to be the election of an African-American Citizen of the United States of America. This is a historical first. Not the Financial Meltdown (we have had those in the past history of America). Not the Healthcare Reform (as we experienced both Medicare and Medicaid. The Priority should reign as the top most important event in the past Decade to insure a “fact”.
I have a suggestion for the past decade which has yet been named:
I thought of: “The Dead Domino Decade”. Why?
l. “DEAD” meaning lacking positive qualities, no warmth, vitality, interest, brightness, brilliance etc. Dead as in wholly indifferent, insensible, without feeling, motion or power. Characterized by little or no movement or activity, slack, stagnant. 2) “DOMINO” because it affected everyone and everything that pertained to America in its path.

Top News Story of 2009? Aside from “Looking Forward” (past War Crimes) since they are just “policy differences,” multi-trillion dollar giveaways (without any penalties for worldwide ENRONesque malfeasance), and no related help for the common people during a Second Depression, Congressman Kucinich gives the answer (with questions): “Is This the Best We Can Do?”
“Is this the best we can do? Forcing people to buy private health insurance, guaranteeing at least $50 billion in new business for the insurance companies?
Is this the best we can do? Government negotiates rates which will drive up insurance costs, but the government won’t negotiate with the pharmaceutical companies which will drive up pharmaceutical costs.
Is this the best we can do? Only 3% of Americans will go to a new public plan, while currently 33% of Americans are either uninsured or underinsured?
Is this the best we can do? Eliminating the state single payer option, while forcing most people to buy private insurance.
If this is the best we can do, then our best isn’t good enough and we have to ask some hard questions about our political system: such as Health Care or Insurance Care? Government of the people or a government of the corporations.”

I turned on the radio Sunday morning on the way to our Democratic Club Sunday brunch. On one progrssive station was I heard was a gospel music program that promoted religious superstition from the darkest of ancient times. On the other progressive station was an infomercial for some quack nutrient that cured everything from athlete’s foot to cancer to dandruff. Everybody knows that won’t work because athlete’s foot, cancer, and dandruff are caused by spinal misalignment.
The right wing stations had similar infomercials. I think Almansor should have shot his radio too! That is a sure way to stop the infomercials forever.
Meanwhile, where is my universal single-payer health care plan? Somehow, I think that Winograd in Congress might have made a difference on this.
The “top news story” would have been what ever spent the most time the news, Michael Jackson.
The most historical would be the election of Obama.
Actually, the top story was measured by the number of searches. Although this is a relatively new method of gauging what people are looking and reading – in terms of news – it’s becoming an accepted barometer.
We forgot to mention the racial tensions that ensued as a result of gestapo-like national policies which were put in place after the 9/11 attacks on U.S. soil. Along with this, we need to remember how bigots of the likes of Lou Dobbs cashed in on these events to raise the American racist spirit, which he did effectively by engaging the American public inapproprietly against immigrants of Spanish-descent. Let us not forget how many Hispanics lost their life at the hands of bigots and how the bigots local authorities plotted to cover up the extent of their hate crimes. Let us not forget how the Southern Poverty Law Center and other organizations diligently monitored the development of hate groups and exposed their identities and their locations. Racial tensions in America in my opinion was the chief concern for Americans, as has always been, throughout the decade but becuase it is such an commonplace topic, we don’t care too much to talk about it where it matters the most. Let’s resuscitate the topic.
