It Seems Sarah Palin Will Be on the National Scene for a While

palin-punch.gifSarah Palin draws the media like a magnet. Whether we like it or not, judging from the amount of press she gets, it appears she’ll remain on the national scene for as long as America and the rest of the world continue to tune in or click. The media loves Sarah Palin which means we’ll be seeing her for quite a while.

This sustained interest in Palin appears to be coming from both the Left and the Right, although its unlikely the two sides are interested for the same reasons. The Left’s interest is probably driven by a need to understand how a person with so little political knowledge or political curiosity could have been chosen as a vice-presidential candidate, or maybe we’re just waiting for the gaffes that are sure to come. The LA Progressive has certainly run its fair share of articles on Sarah Palin for this very reason.

But a large percentage of Republicans view Palin as presidential material. Polls have indicated that Sarah Palin is the candidate of choice for at least 45% of Republicans in the 2012 Presidential race. And, according to the BBC and others in mainstream media, she stole the show at the GOP Governors meeting in Miami.

This month, Mother JonesKevin Drum wrote a compelling piece focusing on the oddity of Palin’s apparent lack of interest in national policy and how that has not damaged her popularity as a Republican politician.

Wrote Drum, “It’s not just that she was inexperienced (Spiro Agnew and John Edwards weren’t much more experienced than Palin when they ran for VP) but that she was — obviously, transparently, completely — uninterested in and uninformed about national policy at nearly every level.”

Drum goes on to say that she was, “chosen purely at the level of celebrity, and an awful lot of people seemed to be just fine with that. ” Hmmm.. At the level of celebrity, kind of like the current governor of California who, in the video below, assesses Palin’s readiness to lead the nation.

Palin’s treatment by mainstream media continues to boggle my mind but when you consider that the right acts as if she is truly a viable option for national leadership, as seen in the video above, it comes as no surprise that low information voters who base their voting decisions on sound bights and endorsements rather than research and analysis, are completely in the dark.

For those of us who are politically active and politically informed, Sarah Palin comes across as a bumbling idiot. But there are vast swaths of America that rarely, if ever, tune in to the political sphere. During their brief forays into politics, Palin may come across as being reasonably articulate and knowledgeable.

She certainly gets a lot of attention on the Web. In a piece I wrote entitled, Sarah Palin’s Feminine Wiles Fall Short, I talk about the spikes in web traffic when Sarah Palin hit the scene. An increase in searches was to be expected, especially in light of the fact that she was a relatively unknown, but what was unusual about the searches for Sarah Palin is that they included key words like “sarah palin legs” or “sarah palin sexy photos”.

Compare the results of a search I performed using Google on November 13th. On the right is the name of the candidate, on the left is the number of returns Google displays when searching these names. I performed the searches using Google Search.

John McCain………………168 Million
Barack Obama……………118 Million
Sarah Palin…………………..58 Million
Hillary Clinton……………….27 Million
Bill Clinton……………………20 Million
Al Gore………………………..16 Million
Joe Biden……………………..15 Million

There were pundits who predicted that Palin would disappear as soon as the election was over. However, this does not seem to be the case. Sarah Palin searches continue to soar, consistently outperforming all other major political players making her a true media magnet. Average Americans and particularly those of a progressive bent should take notice. If this trend continues we may see Palin’s name on national campaign posters sooner rather than later.

sharon-kyle.gifAlthough it may be unreasonable to draw  conclusions about a politician’s electability based on the number of Google search returns associated with their name, you can conclude that there is more information currently being posted on Sarah Palin than for Bill and Hillary Clinton combined. When you consider the amount of media attention given to any Sarah Palin story, for example the attention she got at the GOP Governor’s meeting, I think it wouldn’t be unreasonable to conclude that Sarah Palin is going to be around for quite some time.

America looks forward to reversing the direction the most disastrous presidency in history has steered her in. The Obama/Biden team will be a refreshing change. It will be fun to watch a new First Lady who is genuine, sincere, and obviously compassionate, breathe new life into the White House. American women need a role model who can combine glamour, intelligence, integrity, reserve, and compassion — effectively.

Another admirable woman adding a new dimension to the shape of our poliltical future is Caroline Kennedy. It is fascinating to watch a diverse group of Americans react and respond to her future aspirations toward the New York Senate seat now held by Hillary Rodham Clinton. While her potential candidacy is met with wide enthusiasm, there are the skeptics, the resentful, the baneful, who excoriate her without justification. Some have questioned her voting record, seeming to forget that within a five year period her mother, then brother, died prematurely. She has held “real” jobs (anyone can verify this), she has written and co-authored several books largely addressing Constitutional rights and our privileges as American citizens, and has made considerable contributions of her time to educational programs. And, she’s a lawyer. After the assassination of her father, then uncle, her mother had no choice but to isolate herself, and her children, from the public. Still, Caroline Kennedy has quietly but consistently served her country–no one ever heard about it.

One woman we’ll never hear the end of is Sarah Palin. Ironically, Palin now compares herself with Caroline Kennedy. Sarah Palin, who defeated presidential candidate John McCain put on the map. Nobody had heard of her before. Anyone can research her history, her education, her work experience, her public service, her affiliations with Big Oil. Suddenly she cries “class” warfare, sinking her teeth into Kennedy’s shoes.

If there’s one thing Palin truly embodies, it is the willingness of the Republicans, when all else fails, to wholesale their integrity to exploit the masses. It would take someone like Sarah Palin to jump on Caroline Kennedy’s band-wagon. Palin, rather than attempting to play in the same league, instead sits in the crowd and “boos.” She exploits herself while blaming everyone else. Such encouraging leadership qualities.

There is a much more fundamental issue that has been swept aside by the media circus of primaries, economic collapse and the election. That has to do with who WE are. To love America is to love, first of all – THE CONSTITUTION. Bush/Cheney and the current Congress (with special kudos to the leadership of the Democratic Party)have betrayed their oath of office that requires them to protect and defend that foundation of our democracy.

A question to the President Elect

How will you remove the stain on our Constitution left by the failure of this Congress to honor their oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution in the face of so many carefully researched and well documented violations of trust and law attributed to Bush, Cheney et al?
The Constitution does not empower Speaker Pelosi to take impeachment “off the table”. The repudiation of Bush’s impeachable actions through the constitutionally mandated process of impeachment is the only way to demonstrate to our children, future Presidents and the world that our system of government establishes a nation of laws that works for all the people.
This work left undone is a corrosive so dangerous to the fundamental ideals of our democracy that it undermines the very oath of office taken by every elected officeholder.

“The Left’s interest is probably driven by a need to understand how a person with so little knowledge could have been chosen as a vice-presidential candidate, or maybe we’re just waiting for the gaffes that are sure to come.”

The Right could say the same about the President-elect. With all due respect, haven’t we beat these dead horses enough, or is the left afraid she might actually give Obama a run for his money in 2012?

As an “Informed” voter I sure didn’t vote based on the VP select, and I’m guessing most Democrats didin’t either, considering Biden is THE gaffe factory.

For people who are sure jazzed about “The Big Change” coming, you sure do spend a lot of time on politicos you all have demeaned washed up.

With the left spending so much time and energy trying to further sully her reputation, I’ve got to wonder what you’re really afraid of, losing in 2012? Sounds like it.

Stacey, Sarah Palin’s performances go beyond gaffes; they indicate a thoroughly uninformed mind on elementary issues, for example, the duties of the vice-president of the United States. Your comments began with a crude label, “the Left.” Without offering a definition, you then begin to psycho-analyze members of this category. You conclude that an analysis of Governor Palin’s performances indicates is an attempt “to further sully her reputation,” and indicates fear on the part of the Left. Your assertions repeat the same kind of name-calling and negative psychological imputations that Sarah Palin utulizes. Infectuous, isn’t it? Keep it up, and the Republican Party will be in the Alaskan wilderness for quite a while.

At the beginning of the 21st century in the most industrially and policially developed nation in the world, 58 million voters, almost half of all voters, selected Sarah Palin as vice-president, or potential president of the United States. What is astonishing about this phenomenon is that Governor Palin belongs in high school classes on civics, logic, economics, geography, international relations, sociology, ethics, and biology. This is evident in her gaffes and misstatements in various interviews and speeches. They can be easily found on the internet. How is Palin’s electoral popularity to be explained? Her supporters do not use computers. This is highly unlikely. In any case, the Governor’s intellectual unpreparedness was widely publicized in various media outlets. A more plausible explanation is that Palin’s supporters are Palin clones. They too belong in the high school classes mentioned above. Palin’s appeal and success in 2008, and possibley in 2012, are a case of educational chickens coming home to roost. Educators! You have three years to prevent a world-shaking, electoral catastrophe.

You hit the nail on the head. I’ve often wondered about these people who claim Palin is smart enough to learn what’s needed before becoming president. I’ve wondered how they’d feel about selecting a heart surgeon who knows nothing about performing surgery but is a “quick study”.

I’m betting her 15 min lite is growing dim. As of now there really isn’t much sensational news,(outside of wars, fires, etc), and she is a fascination, A rather dim witted one but one anyway.. 45% of repbs want her to run an 100% of demo’s want her to run.. She is so stupid, anyway moving If i were a betting person and had a bunch of $$ to do nothing with i would bet she doesn’t become Gov again.. I think the majority of Alaskans have seen through her. But saying that i believe she is in deep trouble with Taxes, and or money matters concerning governments. I did a Astrology chart on her admittedly im no Expert in this flied i can read one an she will tossed away by the party so 2 speak an problems will surface she hasn’t even realized yet.. Involving Family and Govts. Well time will Tell… Bill
