Steve Mikulan: The new law sounds like a textbook example of how government can and should help its citizens, especially during a time of economic upheaval.
Tina Dupuy: There are no democratically elected leaders in the Christian Bible. I know – it’s shocking. But, if you catch the rhetoric pertaining to the US Constitution, you’d think the Ten Commandments are its bullet points. They’re not. The whole idea of a representative democracy (a Greek word) comes from Ancient (think then-solvent) Greece. The leaders in the Bible were all kings or tyrants and the Bill of Rights is nowhere in the New or Old Testaments.
Marcy Winograd: Ultimately, we have to ask what the Democratic Party stands for? Who will it endorse? Someone who rushes us to war, covers up illegal wiretapping, and votes with Wall Street to make it easier for banks to foreclose? Or someone committed to global diplomacy, the Bill of Rights, and an end to run-away greed ?
Robert Reich: President Obama today offered a set of proposals for helping America’s troubled middle class. All are sensible and worthwhile. But none will bring jobs back. We’ve all seen a slew of emails distributed that warn Obama supporters to refrain from wearing Obama T-Shirts when they go to the polls. When I first saw these warnings, I went to the California Secretary of State website to see if I could find an official position posted. I thought I might find something [...]
Chinese authoritarian capitalism, on display this week in Beijing, has me thinking about America’s democratic capitalism and how we practice it. Start with the U.S. economy’s most powerful government agency: The Fed, of course. Its decision this week to hold short-term interest rates steady was wrong, in my view; it should have lowered them because [...]
When we left the conversation between former presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, they were commenting on a condolence letter regarding the demise of the United States of America, as written by today’s American Insurgents, (like our founding fathers) today known as Progressive Americans. The two great men have returned to the subject of the [...]
Dear Founding Fathers: We extend our deepest condolences, on the passing of our young and formerly healthy democratic nation, the United States of America. You fought so hard to construct a failsafe and immune Constitution, one that could not only stand the test of time, but could also survive a short-term virulent attack of an [...]
