Health Insurance Is Not Healthcare

healthy insurance

JP Sottile: Instead of retiring the health insurance industry and its actuarial tables and profit margins and wagers, Obama “saved” the health insurance industry and enshrined it in perpetuity as the “Health Insurance-Industrial Complex.”

President Obama: Please Raise My Taxes!

obamas on staircase

Ted Vaill: The Bush tax cuts decreased the top personal income tax rate from 39.6% to 35%. A hypothetical millionaire who had $1,000,000 in adjusted gross income in each of the past 10 years benefitted by over $200,000. It is time for payback. Do it.

Patrician Bully vs. Presidential Geek

romney bully

Dotty Lemeiux: [dc]R[/dc]omney clearly held the President down and pummeled him with his riding crop most of Wednesday evening. The patrician bully smiled throughout and lied masterfully, while the president tried not to squirm.

Obamacare Is Killing Our Bottom Line

billionaires

Clifford Tasner: Heavens! Young people can be covered under Obamacare by their parents plush policies until they’re 26. Cossetting the young isn’t going to help them learn that the world is a harsh place.

Wall Street Confidence Trick: Interest Rate Swaps Bankrupting Local Governments

goldman sachs

Ellen Brown: The creation of credit has too long been delegated to a cadre of private middlemen who have flagrantly abused the privilege. We can avoid the derivatives trap by cutting out the middlemen and creating our own credit.

Not So Sweet Home Alabama

obama super muslim

We have been back in the United States about two weeks now but I immediately realized why I had “opted out” of this system. I had not fully unpacked from our trip to Vietnam when my e-mail was flooded with messages from my conservative friends reminding me that the president was “black”, not really from [...]

Friday Feedback: Occupy’s Demands

Philadelphia Police Captain (Ret) Ray Lewis

Friday Feedback: The notion that if work to open your own company that the government can force you to sell shares of it to employees is very much against what I believe in.

Hope Fades To Fear

Brad Parker: Rather than continue to lift the citizen’s perspective through “Hope, Change and Believe,” the President’s team has moved to “Fear, Pragmatics and Censure.”

A Few Cutting Remarks

indecision-wide

Walter Brasch: Slagheap World Airlines announced that in the spirit of national cost cutting, it would cut back its cockpit crew to one pilot and eliminate flight attendants, meals, and life rafts. “This way,” said the president, “we won’t have to penalize our loyal stockholders by lowering our return on investment.”

For the Right: A Regular Deregulation Celebration

frustration

Michael Sigman: Now that Republicans control the House, they’re hell-bent on further deregulating corporations — now, thanks to the conservative Supreme Court, designated as “people” — while threatening the freedoms of actual people, such as those with preexisting medical conditions or public-sector union memberships.

It’s Nonsensical

we the people

Berry Craig: Never before have so few with so much promised to take away so much from so many and then laugh their asses off as the so many with so little vote for the so few with so much.

Health Care Reform – Six Months Later

healthcare

Peter Dreier: Lots of reporters and pundits-all of whom have good, employer-provided health insurance plans-now say that Obama invested too much capital getting the Affordable Care Act through Congress when he should have been concentrating on the economy.

Congress Should Pass the “Medicare You Can Buy Into” Act

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Florida)

Tracy Emblem: Grayson’s simple public option plan is more cost-effective for many individual’s who are held hostage now by the BIG Four. Buying into Medicare’s larger insurance risk pool brings down individual premiums.

Obama Lies to Defend Blanche Lincoln

Blanche Lincoln

Paul Hogarth: It’s natural for progressives to target conservative Democrats like Lincoln who are to blame, fielding primary challenges like they did to Joe Lieberman. But how the Party leadership berates, belittle, and insults these efforts will only make it worse – while a clear anti-incumbent mood is sweeping the nation that threatens to doom Blanche Lincoln anyway.

After the Flood

tennessee flood

K. Danielle Edwards: I have coworkers and even a relative who have likely lost their homes. Most Tennesseans, as this article outlines, do not have flood insurance. As a result, most of us will be denied by our insurance companies for not having coverage we were either prohibited from purchasing (if one does not live in an official flood plain) or were told we did not need.

Catch 22 with President Obama

lydia howell

Lydia Howell: Ultimately, what is most important about Barack Obama may not be that he is an African-American president but, that — like Bill Clinton before him — he is a Corporate Democrat, who offers no real alternatives to Big Business As Usual and Endless Wars for Empire — (just like the Republicans

Did Obama Kill Public Option in July?

GOP-health-care

Paul Hogarth: President Obama has been justifiably slammed for not pushing hard enough for a public option, but the truth may be even worse than that. We know the White House cut a deal with hospitals and insurance companies last July on prescription drugs – but as a New York Times reporter said this week, they also killed the public option. And given the public option’s inexplicable fate, I have to believe the story.

Medicare-for-All: The Answer to a President’s Call and a Nation’s Woes

Obama-sotu

Dr. Margaret Flowers: I was overjoyed to hear you say in your State of the Union address on Wednesday night: “But if anyone from either party has a better approach that will bring down premiums, bring down the deficit, cover the uninsured, strengthen Medicare for seniors, and stop insurance company abuses, let me know.” My colleagues, fellow health advocates and I have been trying to meet with you for over a year now because we have an approach which will meet all of your goals and more.

OFA Should Reassess Organizing Strategy

Real Captain America

Craig Williams: An old Teamster organizer once told me “you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.” It’s also an insult to working people and the tradition of organizing.

No, No, Joe!

Lieberman-orderley

Jerry Drucker:
In his 2006 primary fight against Ned Lamont, No No Joe told the voters he was all for universal health care for all Americans and they needed him in office to push it through. (He must have meant ‘push it through the exit door.’)

Holiday Shopping 2009: The Customer Is Always Right!

Art Torres

Brad Parker: If our former Chair of the CDP was correct, that the Democratic Party is a business, then it follows that it is also just another in the current line of American businesses that can’t or won’t Stand & Deliver on its Goods & Services

2009: The Year Change Fell Prey to Backroom Deals

Poltics

I don’t recall how or when single-payer was taken “off the table” – except that Senator Max Baucus said it was. Without single payer, progressives focused on the public option – which although a compromise, could have held insurance companies accountable. Everyone knew it was tough and compromise would happen, but we were supposed to be part of that decision.

Forty More Days

James Carville

As long as the Democratic leadership insists on being directed by the supposed wisdom of this advice, they will continue down their present path to an electoral train wreck next November as bad or worse than the one they suffered in 1994, when they played their cards the same way.

How a Few Private Health Insurers Are on the Way to Controlling Health Care

Little-healthcare

Without some mechanism forcing private insurers to compete, we’re going to end up with a national health care system that’s controlled by a handful of very large corporations accountable neither to American voters nor to the market.

Obama Becoming Clinton I Feared

Obama-Clinton

The American people who voted for “change” did not merely seek a return to the Nineties – or else they would have nominated Hillary Clinton. Obama stood to become the most progressive President in over 40 years, and yet his Administration has little to show for it.

New Study: Public Option Popular In Blue Dog Districts, Across Nation

Blue-dog

Isn’t it w-a-y past time for the president, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to call out Democrat opponents for what they are: Lying shills who are in the pocket of insurance companies, and who have no regard for the problems of their constituents.

America’s Failed Model for the World

EU

The US used to lecture us in Europe about just about everything, but what does America have to teach now? Maybe America should learn something from Europe.

California’s Initiative Process Could Lead the Way on Real Health Insurance Reform

Propositions

Given a chance to do something simple, clear, and fair to limit insurance company death panels and to punish bad faith insurance decisions, many people might stand up for beginning health insurance reform the way they stood up for car insurance reform.

Friday Feedback: Putting Our Lives in Corporate Hands

I do find it amusing, however, that the right wing wants people to trust insurance companies over government. Insurance companies have been the most incredibly grotesque example of service and loophole digging I have ever witnessed. The idea that my life would be in the hands of a company that exists solely to make profit and who hires people whose compensation is based on finding ways to deny claims, would be incredibly horrifying.

Who Is Behind the Privatization of Public Education?

education

This whole alarming privatization process is accelerating across the country and here in California, propelled by corporate interests who are writing state legislation and school board policies to facilitate their takeover of public schools.
