Les GOP Misérables

Brent Budowksy: When Republicans try to destroy collective bargaining with the fanaticism of Javert trying to destroy Valjean, they create backlash and fear that escalates the organizing and activism of labor and its supporters.

Time to Impeach Justice Scalia

antonin scalia

Alan Singer: We can no longer afford to tolerate Scalia as a conservative curmudgeon; he is a right-wing ideologue who is in a position to threaten constitutional government in the United States.

Supreme Court Matters

barack obama ruth bader ginsburg

Andy Love: Elections do have consequences, as they say, and the electorate needs to understand that the consequences this time around couldn’t be more serious. If ever there was a time for the President to run against the Court, it is now.

Limbaugh Growing Impotent?

rush limbaugh

Peter Dreier: Limbaugh’s gross comments about a female college student who voiced support for Obama’s birth-control insurance compromise have forced some old Republican allies to distance themselves, raising questions about Limbaugh losing his potency.

Duane Buck: Tolerating Racism In Capital Cases

duane buck

Andy Love: After we we take a collective sigh of relief that Hank Skinner obtained a last minute stay so that his lawyers can once again seek to have key evidence DNA tested, we must then sigh in despair over the result of another Texas death penalty case.

A Call to Arms for Wealthy Progressives

living-in-poverty-wide

Brent Budowsky: It is time to say we will not let America go, and fall under the one-party state domination of a right-wing extremism that uses words like “liberty” in the service dark visions that would make our Founding Fathers cringe with horror.

Justice Clarence Thomas’ Income Tax Oversight?

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas

Miles Blue: Recently, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, over a four year period, failed to report his wife’s rather substantial income. A one-time failure may be human error; a four-time failure is a willful, criminal, act. Thomas deserves impeachment. His behavior is not acceptable for a Supreme Court Justice.

The American Family

Egerston

Carl Matthes: Imagine, in the 21st century, a church orthodoxy which “punishes” life-long, educated adult ministers from loving Christ-centered families for following their conscience. Amazing! I am sure that even Christ had to look away.

The Supreme Court Unveiled

Supreme Court Justices

The term of a supreme court justice ends one of four ways; retirement, resignation, impeachment conviction, or death. However, only one Supreme Court justice has been impeached, Samuel Chase. Impeached in 1804, Chase was acquitted and remained on the bench until his death in 1811. So, to sum it up, if one were to rely on history to forecast the future, the likelihood of a justice being impeached and removed is slim to none.

Why Clarence Thomas Owes African-Americans an Apology

clarence thomas

David Love: When Ginni Thomas — the Tea Partying wife of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas — left Anita Hill a voicemail message asking for an apology, she got it all wrong. It’s really Clarence Thomas who owes the apology, to the black community that is.

Supreme Court Hearings: What’s at Stake

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama)

David A. Love: I don’t know about you, but after watching the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan, I was given the distinct impression that Thurgood Marshall was being subjected to a criminal trial, post-mortem, by Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The GOP’s Rebel Yell!

Sikivu Hutchinson: Standing jubilantly before his subjects like a schlubby cartoon potentate, Newt Gingrich, the GOP’s resident court jester/sage/adulterer extraordinaire, declared Obama to be the most “radical” president in U.S. history at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference. Reveling in the event’s torch passing pageantry, the audience lapped up Gingrich’s tirade against the “secular socialist” Obama machine. Coming on the heels of Virginia governor Bob McDonnell’s racist paean to Confederate pride (in which Southern honor was smote in a zip-a-dee-doo-da world without slavery or slaves), the conference issued another call to arms.

Who’s Afraid of World Government?

Atlas

But let’s give Glenn Beck and his ilk their due. If there were a more effective global organization, that world body would be able to reach across national boundaries to cope with global warming, defend human rights, prosecute war criminals and terrorists, regulate multinational corporations, provide famine relief, enforce arms control and disarmament, and prevent military aggression.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Watching Latino Politics Disappear

Sotomayor

This exclusion of Latinos from the health debate, and from all public policy issues other than immigration, is neither coincidence nor accident. It is part of the same strategy that sees Latinos excluded from the cable political news shows, and from the Sunday interview shows on the traditional networks.

The GOP Has Become A Bugs Bunny Cartoon

fredo

According to the loonie chorus on the right, we’re all sons of bitches now. When they’re not bashing Sonia Sotomayor for asking sharp questions from the bench – which would seem to be a pretty basic part of the job description for a judge – or wondering whether her taste in spicy food clouds her [...]

What the Specter Switch Ultimately Means

specter-flu

Arlen Specter?!?!?! The first time I blurted that out was during an industry screening of Oliver Stone’s “JFK”, in which his name came up in connection with the rogue “magic bullet” issue. I just had another Arlen Spector blurt a few minutes ago (as of this writing, anyway). He’s switching? Defecting? “Coming home,” as some [...]
