Kill Wasteful Missile Defense Efforts

star wars

Ivan Eland: This government “Star Wars” effort has been a boondoggle, but then huge costs and poor performance rarely cause any government program to be terminated—evidence of this effect is exhibited by the continued flow of money to the project despite three decades of failure.

Portraits in Deregulation

Tom Degan: It’s always a hoot watching Rick Perry trying to lure business from California to his state. His pitch? Texas has a “predictable” business climate, by which he means, “ain’t no gub’ment messin’ round here with all them damn regulations”.

Warmongering vs. Pacifism

Nick Capo: Without pacifism’s absolute repudiation of war, many people apparently cannot withstand the emotional and social pressure placed upon them by those who wish for war, and ever more wars. They succumb to war fever.

Why We Must Occupy Democracy

Robert Reich: The First Amendment is being stood on its head. Money speaks, and an unlimited amount of it can now be spent bribing and cajoling politicians. Yet peaceful assembly is viewed as a public nuisance and removed by force.

Taxing the Rich, the Obama Way

Warren-Buffett-wide

Robert Reich: You can bet Republicans will continue to harp about the large portion of low-wage earners who pay no income taxes — without mentioning that they pay a higher portion of their incomes than anyone else in payroll and sales taxes.

The Truth About the American Economy

Robert Reich: As we should have learned from the Great Prosperity — the 30 years after World War II when America grew because most Americans shared in the nation’s prosperity — we cannot have a growing and vibrant economy without a growing and vibrant middle class.

Power, Sex, and Money

Carl Matthes: Imagine, the finest and best that God could call from His earthly flock to serve in His Holy Church did nothing wrong because when they were molesting young children, they were just “responding to social turmoil.”

Inside Job

inside-job-wide

Tom Degan: What is incredible about this very important film is that a few of the perpetrators of this incalculable theft arrogantly sat down with the makers of the film for interviews that are as jaw-dropping as they are outrageous.

Remembering Cesar Chavez

Caitlin Vega: My mother-in-law is soft-spoken and sweet, but put her on a picket line and she is transformed. To me, that’s what Cesar Chavez stood for, and it’s what our labor movement is all about.

How Democrats Can Become Relevant Again

entertainment-wide

Robert Reich: Republicans offered Democrats two more weeks before the doomsday shut-down. Democrats countered with four. Republicans held their ground. Democrats agreed to two. This is what passes for compromise in our nation’s capital.

Raging Inequality and Red-State Rationale

texas-wide

Charles Hayes: Republicans are celebrating the 2010 Census because it reflects a gain in congressional seats in traditionally conservative states, but it would be wise of them to realize that a significant number of these people are moving because they can’t find work. Many of them have lost their homes to foreclosure, and if the Republican Party doesn’t get a clue pretty soon, these states may turn a brighter shade of purple with a tint of blue.

Ronnie at 100

Tom Degan: The sad, pathetic truth of the matter is that on the evening of Tuesday, November 4, 1980 I got so falling-down intoxicated, I voted for the man just as a joke. A failed, “B” movie actor in the White House? That ought to be good for a nice, long chuckle , I thought.

Serious Tax Problems

Tom Degan: The debt that the United States has incurred in the last ten years is now at a level where it’s probably insurmountable. The only solution (and that’s assuming there is a viable solution) will involve taxes – decades of serious taxation.

Random Thoughts

Tom Degan: The 20th century was the American Century. The 21st will be the Chinese Century. Our representatives (from both sides of the aisle) will see to that. Get used to the idea.

Discombobulated Wingnuttery

If a person is uneducated to such a degree that articulating their political views rationally and coherently is not possible, then emotion is all they can bring to the table. If a person knows little of history and little of the dynamics of human behavior and politics, then any and all arguments that they don’t fully understand are perceived as an assault on their identity.

Sarah Running in 2012

Tom Degan: What if we were to wake up on the morning after the election to find the jackasses on FOX and Friends beside themselves with glee, chanting like rabid little myna birds , “PRESIDENT-ELECT PALIN! PRESIDENT-ELECT PALIN!”
