Who Will Win Town Hall Immigration Battle?

Randy Shaw: The future of immigration reform could well to be decided in the next three weeks. And this will occur not in the halls of Congress but in Congressional Town Hall meetings across the nation.

“Hurray! Congress Is to Adjourn!”

mark twain

Ted Vaill: Seventy or eighty arch-conservative Tea Party members of the House and Senate have held this country hostage to their right-wing demands that we sacrifice entitlements belonging to ordinary, hard working Americans for the benefit of their rich friends. What is the mood of the ordinary American? Disgust.

A Tale of Two Town Halls

Joseph Palermo: The Republican House members who voted for Paul Ryan’s Ayn Rand wet-dream budget are apparently getting an earful from their constituents.

Mad As Hell Doctors Coming to Town

The Mad As Hell Doctors (MAHD), a group of activist physicians, nurses and other health care providers who are fighting for a Single Payer National Health Insurance Program for all Americans, will tour California with 26 educational, entertaining events beginning September 23 in Arcata and ending in Sacramento on October 12.

Brad Sherman’s Middle-East Town Hall Rife With Fear and Aggression

Linda Milazzo: Not surprisingly in this election year, Brad Sherman is ginning up his Jewish constituency (who usually vote), and Jews in general (who usually donate), with his unrelenting support for Israel – including Israel’s controversial boarding of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla’s Mavi Mara and its killing of eight Turkish citizens and one Turkish American citizen – an act internationally condemned by all nations except Israel’s steadfast ally, the United States.

Coming Soon: Corporate Town Halls against Social Security

Shamus Cooke: The group organizing the national town halls is the “non-partisan and non-profit” America Speaks. But scratching the surface of this purportedly harmless group reveals a corporate snake pit. America Speak’s Board of Directors and National Advisory Board showcase an impressive list of corporate CEO’s, CFO’s, consultants, politicians, and elite law firms. Not a single voice from working people is to be found.

Cola Wars and the Campaign to Sell Wall Street Status Quo

Tina Dupuy: Health care reform is a far cry from government taking over anything. In the town halls over the summer people were upset by the idea, so with some encouragement and coaching by interest groups they came out to make that known. As the saying goes, feelings are not facts and in the health care debate the latter beat the snot out of the former. In the end we’re a sick nation that pays more than any other country for health care and we still rate low in quality of care. The bill that passed is an improvement not a cure-all and certainly not enough to trigger the end of the world or even cause an unpronounceable Icelandic volcano to erupt.

Fixed?

Big Pharma, Big Oil, Big Milk. All special interest patrons of America’s Big Money bordello. What are good progressives to do? Either we get lobotomies (not that recession-lashed activists can afford them) or we fix the way the country finances politics.

The Plan for White Slavery

manzanar

Thus after a history of repeated othering of African Americans in the US, it is not unusual for the picture of the black thief climbing through the windows of our homes to evolve into the imaginings of a black man in the White House stealing our healthcare and hard fought freedoms.

Don Lemon & CNN, No to “Real Americans” – Yes to Real Journalism!

the-boss

While I applaud Mr. Lemon for confronting Hardage, I wonder where his and corporate media’s outrage has been for the last eight years while the patriotism of those who opposed George Bush was constantly assailed. Instead of challenging accusations against Bush dissenters, corporate media embraced them. In fact they indulged them.

The Naked Truth: Big Government vs. Big Business

On the presidential campaign trail, Christina Chavez reminded us that her father, Cesar Chavez, once said that we don’t need perfect government but perfect participation. Criticism comes easy to those who have been long disappointed but hope lives on imagination, perseverance, and initiative.

Control or Facilitation? The Immigration Town Hall at the CDP Convention

Progressives had many things to feel good about during the 2008 CDP Convention in San Jose. There were some long sought gains made for principles and the people – especially on the Platform Committee and our new mostly Progressive platform. However, the fate of the Immigration Town Hall, initiated by the Progressive Caucus, was a [...]
