Dear Charley,

I am so glad I am one of the people who reads your thoughts and observations. I can't thank you enough for those.
I most sincerely hope you find peace in your decisions. May Heaven bless you in your time remaining, what wonderful companions pets can be at difficult times! (I love Autumn, balmy days anyway)

Just in case you want to try some non-Western medicine, in 2001 I gave my tax man (who had an inoperable brain tumor) 2 jars of Chinese herbs, and he is still alive after 8 years... I went to a traditional herb store, asked about treatments and they gave me the capsules, and a little dietary advice. I understand that the by-product from bee hives called propolis is good for healing. Royal Jelly is also very powerful, but I consider it a feminine "herb". Who knows, it couldn't harm you, could it?
Blessings, prayers,
Clara

Thank you all for your kind words and supportive comments. And to Mr. Rudyard, I especially appeciate such a fine example of Christian charity and empathy.

I would say I'm sorry and give you my condolences, but that seems almost insulting considering the decision you've made. You're suffering and have been for what I gather has been a while. You struck me as a kind, generous, eccentric man. These are rare qualities these days and so I am sad that all this has happened to you. However, having said that, I'd rather not see you suffer and while I wish all this was different, I understand your decision to the best of my young, naive ability. I also support that decision.

Enjoy the sun, enjoy the snow, watch the Lake freeze if that happens this year, and rub your dog on his head.

I have not been faced with such dire news, but your writing about it is powerful. I don't think I ever got to sit next to you on a plane, because I am sure I would remember you.

Best wishes, and you figure out what they should be for you.

I lost my sister a week ago Sunday to cancer. She was 63. I'm still trying to get over the shock. She had been fighting it for a couple years and seemed to be holding her own, then suddenly it took off like a prairie fire and she was gone almost before we knew it.
Needless to say I am also more than a little worried about my own prospects. My father and uncle both had cancerous patches removed.
I wish you all the best, this couldn't have been easy to write. Take care and good luck to you.

It sounds like a great life in so many respects - sorry about the chasm between you and women. A man whom I respect and treasure taught me many valuable things but had three disastrous marriages. I didn't trust myself to be exceptional enough to be his fourth.

Dearest Charley,

I understand and fully support your decision to check out with grace when the time comes. I've told my husband repeatedly that, when my life becomes more painful than the alternative, I'll end it. Whether I'll have your courage remains to be seen.

A devoted reader who wishes you the very best!

Charley, I won't pretend to second guess you on your decision. I am also a "survivor". I was diagnosed five years ago next month. Spent six months at Methodist in Houston doing chemotherapy and radiation (full course, can never do more). My cancer (squamous cell carcinoma, base of tongue, stage III) has a pretty high rate of recurrence. The treatments were horrible, and even though I could never convince myself that I might die, in the depths of the treatments I really didn't care. Now, nearly five years after end of treatment, I have a good life. I've lived to see two new grandkids, to see a son-in-law graduate from law school and pass the bar, see an ex-wife do the same, make quite a few new friends, walk with some old friends through their bouts with cancer, and enjoy nearly five more years of sunsets. I can't imagine giving any of that up. I know how horrible the treatment were and yet, if it comes back, I expect to do it all again (except for the radiation `cause there can be no more of that) because who knows what else awaits on this side of that great divide.
I've enjoyed your writings for the few months that I've known about you, and hate that there may be no more.
Love ya'
