I still don’t get it. Why are troops in Iraq and Afganistan? The real truth??? All explanations still don’t seem credable? What am I missing???

My hope is the hope of every American. I hope that the Obama administration’s political objective in Afghanistan (“to disrupt, dismantle and defeat Al Qaeda”) is going to be successful. However, the almost certain surge is committing our soldiers for the long haul. Central to this effort will be a vast amount of aid and development projects in both Iraq and Afghanistan. There is one huge problem with this plan. This short term employment of force as a means to realize a political solution can only work if moderate Taliban surrender their arms, disassociate from al Qaeda and cross over to our side.

Washington is again asking the citizenry to:
•put our faith in some grandly ambitious account of the way it knows things
•hope that it gets the Afghan/Iraq question and answer right.

If it succeeds in reaching the goal aimed for, it will not be because some strategy guiding it. It will be because American soldiers have been lucky and alert enough to fashion the materials at their disposal into something that hangs together, at least for the moment. We will see.

…the word today (Tues. Nov. 24) is that President Obama will announce next week that he is sending an additional 38,000 troops to Afghanistan. …and other reports put the cost of an escalating Afghan War at one trillion dollars..! Somehow we don’t have a problem increasing the deficit to pay for war, but we can argue in the same breath that we can’t afford health care reform…!
