While I think there is merit in getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan, the idea of dumping 200k jobless soldiers back on the street in a job shortage is not going to help the unemployment rate, and the resentment of those soldiers and their families would be huge. I think a better approach would be to bring the troops home and put them to work on projects that actually benefit this country.

I don't think the problem is spending money as much as spending money on things that are of little benefit to the country. Put some of these soldiers to work in Habitat for Humanity, and in installing windmills and creating community gardens that can help people who are out of work feed themselves. The armed forces are a huge disciplined workforce, and with a change in direction it could help save this country from collapse.

Obama is spending a lot but it is hard for me to imagine how jobs are going to appear out of nowhere without it with demand for goods and services being down and banks not lending money for just about anything.

As far as pork is concerned, any spending that purchases services or products in this country preserves and creates jobs. Some jobs like building useless fighter planes benefit the public less than say rebuilding schools or repairing bridges, but these are high paying jobs and dumping those workers into a jobless market will stop them spending their paychecks and put them on unemployment. We need to create job transitions for current workers in useless jobs and use spending to create new jobs.
