Just read your piece. What a terrible thing! I would have thought that combat stress was being considered more seriously, but with stories like yours, along with pieces I've heard/read about Canadian soldiers having difficulties with access to mental health support, we ARE failing them. That's exactly why they released the report on friday, so no one would read about it - you hit that nail squarely on the head!

I'd bet the depressed, severely depressed, broken families, near suicides and suicides never even make it into any statistics in any case. Which itself is a tragedy.

Our military is good at turning civilians into soldiers. Not so good, though, at turning soldiers back into civilians.

<i>"They blamed it on the Islamic fanatics, at the time. [...] That was when they suspended the Constitution. They said it would be temporary." -Handmaid's Tale</i>

I hope Rachel Maddow covers this tonight. She is usually great about covering the "Friday night news dumps". This certainly deserves good coverage. Thanks for writing about it and bringing it to my attention.

Thank you raising awareness of this issue! My husband is a combat medic, and he has soldiers coming to him daily trying to get help who aren't able to get help. Untreated PTSD and Combat Stress is causing fallout for military families ranging from suicide to homicide as well as domestic violence, alcoholism and drug addiction.

Currently we are at Fort Campbell, with one of the highest soldier suicide rates in the country. I could (and have, on my blog) tell stories about the lack of support for soldiers and their families that are shocking and shameful including a photo of what passes for suicide prevention at Fort Campbell - Neon orange road signs that implore soldiers to "help prevent suicide".

Thank you for covering this, it's a life or death issue for many of our soldiers and their families.
