What Is a Maverick?

maverick What Is a Maverick? The American Heritage Dictionary: Maverick – An unbranded or orphaned range calf or colt, traditionally considered the property of the first person who branded it.

Answer.com: maverick – One that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter.

Chuck: “Why does that double talkin’ guy, call hisself a maverick?”

Murf: “Shucks, that mean yer talkin’ about that there Senator John McCain, ain’t ya?

Chuck: “Reckon’ I am”

Murf: “Well, I’ll tell ya. The real meanin’ of maverick is unbranded cattle, but McCain was branded early by that fella’ Charlie Keating in a scandal back in ’89. McCain was one of the Keating Five Senators that was hogtied in that big Savings and Loans corruption roundup, costin’ the U.S. tax payer $125 billion. Just like that bailout that’s goin’ on today, paid for by the tax payers. That Keating Five range party even tied in W.’s brother, Neil Bush.”

Chuck: “Yer tellin’ me the McCain fella, still carries the Keating Five Brand?”

Murf: “Well, he’s tried his darndest to hide that brand under his hide. He was tryin’ to wear the maverick GOP brand and wants to get his Keating Five brand off his back. Now, he don’t want the GOP brand neither. He’s got that pretty little heifer to help him. She calls herself a maverick too”

Chuck: “She helpin’ any?”

Murf: She does plenty of flirtin’ with winks, smiles, plays the flute, says ‘you betcha,’ doggone, Jo Sixpack, hockey mom and she don’t answer no question. She’ll answer, something like “I’ll tell you what I will talk about.” Guess you’ll have to look ‘maverick’ up on Goo Goo, or that internet stuff.”

The origin of maverick: Put the blame on Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803-1870)

jerry drucker head What Is a Maverick?Maverick didn’t believe in branding his cattle, and in this manner he could pick up unbranded cattle from the open range and claim them as his own. He didn’t believe in following the law of the land and he did what he pleased. That explains why Palin & McCain call themselves ‘mavericks.’ They’ll lead by not having to follow the Constitution or U.S. laws and they’ll privatize as much as possible. Palin demonstrated her contempt of the law by refusing to answer a legal subpoena. You betcha.

Well said. When I hear the word Maverick I always think of the “movie” with Mel Gibson. Your description however is more fun and appropriate I guess.

    25. Diane, don’t forget Cousin Beau!

So can anybody tell me, how much of Oscar Hammerstein’s lyrics (from his and Richard Rodgers’ Oklahoma!) can I quote under Fair Use, before the RIAA and MPAA take it away from us?

Oh, the cattle are standing like statues
The cattle are standing like statues
They don’t turn their heads as they see me ride by
And a little brown maverick is winkin’ her eye….
