John Ryder is a retired philosopher and university administrator. He spent most of his career teaching and serving in various administrative posts in the State University of New York. After leaving there in 2010 he served as Rector of a university in Azerbaijan, and Provost in the United Arab Emirates and in Malta. He was twice a Visiting Professor at Moscow State University in the 1980s, and Fulbright Senior Specialist at St. Petersburg State University in 2007. He is currently a consultant for and Visiting Professor at Szechenyi Istvan University in Hungary. He divides his time between Tucson, Arizona and, international conditions permitting, St. Petersburg, Russia.
He is the author of books and articles on various aspects of philosophy and education, including Interpreting America: Russian and Soviet Studies of the History of American Thought (1999), The Things in Heaven and Earth: An Essay in Pragmatic Naturalism (2013), Knowledge, Art, and Power: An Outline of a Theory of Experience (2020), and most recently the yet unpublished On The One Great Thing: Excursions in the Philosophy of Education. His articles on social and political philosophy have been translated and published in several languages, including French, German, Slovak, Romanian, Polish, and Russian.
