Sylvia Moore: Since it’s unlikely California will get another single payer bill introduced at the state level anytime soon, perhaps what Schweitzer did in Montana can be replicated at the local level.
Sylvia Moore: When the punditocracy constantly complains about Beltway gridlock, they don’t acknowledge the obvious structural flaws staring right at them in the face. America needs a new form of democracy. Our version has run its course.
Sylvia Moore: [dc]N[/dc]ow that the dust has settled and President Obama has been re-elected, America needs to make election reform and the universal expansion of voting rights a high priority.
Sylvia Moore: As Americans, we have to ask ourselves, how long are our lawmakers going to continue to allow these too-big-to-fail institutions escape accountability?
Sylvia Moore: This year’s Just Media: L.A. Media Reform Summit, held Feb. 26 at Occidental College, drew 200 activists, speakers and concerned members of the public for an all-day conference on how to build a better news and information environment for our communities.

Sylvia Moore: If this extremist speech isn’t soon ostracized from public life in the U.S., the lone, crazed gunman will morph into organized mobs hell bent on murdering political opponents and even committing genocide.
Sylvia Moore: On Tuesday, the Federal Communications Commission voted on new rules that critics say could allow media conglomerates to decide whose content gets to be seen on the Internet and whose doesn’t. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is said to have the votes he needs to pass net neutrality regulation.
Sylvia Moore: Aside from the Republicans, the corporate media were big winners in this year’s turbulent mid-terms. This election was the most expensive non-presidential election in history, with $4 billion spent by candidates.
Sylvia Moore: Sometimes the ones we love need understanding and time to make things right. Obama has only had less than two years to turn around an economy and society that took the GOP 30 years to destroy. And, he is hamstrung by an archaic, corrupt and dysfunctional political system that desperately needs fundamental structural reform.
Sylvia Moore: The American left must be feared and respected by the politicians — instead of ignored and insulted. The way to do that is to be defiant in who we are as liberals and what we stand for.
Sylvia Moore: The pro-corporate, anti-tax Tea Party movement has gotten wall-to-wall press coverage, even though only about 30 percent of the population actually supports it. Saturday’s event did get some national coverage from the major television networks, but that paled in comparison to the kind of attention the Tea Partiers are getting on a routine basis. Locally, all I could find was this 37-second clip from ABC7 News. Kudos to ABC for showing up.
