Boycotting Fox News Advertisers

Fox NewsFox News, the promoter of everything from “birthers” to “deathers,” is now the target of a campaign to boycott its advertisers. Leading the effort to contact advertisers and sponsors and encourage them to drop their advertising on Fox News are:

A favorite tactic of devoted, vocal Conservatives is that they claim they are just exercising their right to free speech and that Progressive Liberal Democrats don’t want to hear “both sides.”

Coming to Town Hall meetings and shouting down others or disrupting with catcalls or hoots of derision is not discussing “both sides.” Nor is it Free Speech. It’s like “Free Noise;” like calling “Fox News,” “Fox Noise.”

For instance, what is the other side to Obama not being born in America? Say what you want, but come on “birthers,” there is no other side to that issue which you want to “debate.” Ditto for “deathers.” These Conservative folk are trying to scare seniors into believing that discussing end-of-life health care directives with your doctor is tantamount to being grilled by a “death panel” of faceless bureaucrats. How can that be discussed? The real emphasis needs to be on giving seniors and doctors the time necessary to discuss actual details of “right-to-die” issues, not the legitimacy of Sarah Palin’s claim that the government is forming “death panels” or that seniors will be given a deadly compound like the fictional “soylent green.”

Discussion is precluded. And for Conservatives, no discussion means their scare tactics win.

While, during any given hour, there are distorted statements and reports emanating from Fox News, some of the most dangerous ones are actually examples of hate speech and incitement to violence:

  • 6/30/09 Glenn Beck agreed with guest who urged bin Laden to attack U.S. with nuclear weapons.
  • 7/25/09 Neil Cavuto and guest said health care reform will impose universal euthanasia like “Soylent Green.”
  • 7/28/09 Glenn Beck said “The President has exposed himself as a guy…who has a deep-seated hatred for white people…or the white culture…This man is a racist.”
  • 8/6/09 Glenn Beck “joked” about giving Speaker Pelosi a glass of wine with poison.

Where is the “other side” of those issues? There isn’t any. This is truly incitement and fear mongering.

Complaining to Fox News, or even CNN about Lou Dobbs, for instance, does not always seem productive. Boycotting sponsors/advertisers seems a stronger way to protest. For instance, recent reports show that some leading companies, after learning of consumer boycott action, have already ended their Fox News advertising. They are: Campbell Soup, Chrysler, General Motors, Kellogg, Kraft Foods,, Nestle, Pfizer, Proctor & Gamble, Progressive Insurance and Walmart.

Food and Drug Administration now seems poised to
pull e-cigs from the market because the agency considers them “new drugs. A return policy is provided by most manufacturers as If it is the user’s first e-cigarette purchase, then he or she may return it so that they can buy the an electronic cigarette which suits them best. E-cigs offer many benefits to smokers and non-smokers alike.

WOW! I guess I will be supporting all the above! Nice to know it’s “hate” for disagreeing. It’s always “hate” isn’t it. But when u “hate” on a conservatives idea that is ok. It would be ok to “hate” a Christian, right? hmmmm

  3. Philip Tymon says

I have been planning to buy a Toyota Prius within the next year and was very disappointed to see Toyota on the list of Fox advertisers. I called Toyota’s 800 number and told the person who answered that while I had been planning to buy a Toyota, I would not do so as long as they advertised on Fox News. He actually seemed quite sympathetic to my point of view– to the extent that he would be allowed to say anything. I told him that I considered advertising on Fox News the equivalent of advertising on the Nazi News Network. I am hoping that by the time I am ready to buy a car, Toyota will have stopped advertising on Fox News.If not, I will have a difficult choice to make– especially as there are so few car companies that don’t advertise on Fox News– but I doubt I would buy a car, or any product, from a company that advertises on Fox News.

Perhaps if everyone would call just one or two of the companies on the list, they might get the message.

Boycotting establishments that show Fox News and the companies that advertise on fox is a great Idea; however the effect might not be felt as hard as boycotting the parent company of FOX news. Conducting a boycott of Fox News alone will have very little effect if any, because those who would participate in such a boycott are Americans who don’t watch Fox News as it is. Boycotting Fox’s parent company, News Corporation, and all the other channels it owes might have a great effect. A well developed e-mail should be generated and distributed to the masses to boycott all News corporation products and media to include, FOX Broadcasting Company, FOX Sports, MyNetworTv, FOX Business, FOX Movie Channel, FOX NEWS Channel, FOX College Sports, FOX Sports En Espanol, FOX Sports NET, FOX Soccer Channel, Fuel TV, FX, NAT Geo Wild, National Geographic Channel, Speed, STAR, and most importantly all local FOX Television Stations. The boycott should call for a date to commence this boycott so that everyone stops watching at the same time. The Boycott should continue until News Corporation develops programming that lives up to its slogan of fair and balance. News Corporation should be asked to generate disclaimers before all its programming that denote actual news programming and programming that is merely entertainment like the Hannity, Glen Beck, and the Greta show. Boycotting the other networks that News Corporation owns will have a greater effect because many Americans who do not agree with the lies and hate message that FOX NEWS presents are not watching FOX News however they are watching News Corporation’s other networks and their local channels. If local channels begun to notice massive decline in their viewership they will pressure News Corporation into re-visiting its programming on FOX NEWS. Sending the boycott email to groups who are greatly affected by the hate message on FOX News; like African Americans, Latinos, and pro- labor groups can generate interest and possible massive movement towards the boycott. The Boycott should take place before the November 2010 elections so that it might gain the attention of politicians and use their platform to increase the interest in the boycott. I’m sure someone out there is eloquent enough to type up the message and through social media distribute it. I would love to generate the message but as you might have notice my grammar is not as strong as it should be to convey something this powerful.

Maybe they should make the list smaller even though it does have a lot of good info in it. Hey everyone should get a security systems for there house for they know that they are safe.

Thanks, Carl, for posting this list. Unfortunately, the list is too large to be useful. Is there a way to break down the list into something more manageable?

I would suggest ignoring the advertisers during Fox new hours (9 am – 4 pm), and focus instead on the opinion-mongers outside of those hours. Better yet, choose 1, such as Glenn Beck. A sustained boycott of the advertisers of a single show is possible, and would be quite effective.

Another alternative would be to add the list of shows sponsored by each advertiser to your list above, that way you could avoid being accused of attacking one particular TV personality. Thanks again for the great work.

  7. Ron says

You are attacking FOX VIEWERS not the FOX channel.Without viewers there would be no FOX. With viewers there will always be sponsors.

You call us racists or your other weird names but you do not offer logical points of view that might win over others.

I do not like all this debt. I do not like all the government encroachment much less trust the government to be competent or honest. I have a lot of other views that make sense. If you call me names but can’t give me decent reasoning , you will never win me over. I am interested in common sense and I do not hear much from the anti-Fox audience crowd.

  8. Ron says

Since more people watch Fox than all the other cables combined might this effort just increase the purchases of these products and thus their Fox advertising?

  9. Dan says

The reason for the boycott of Fox News advertisers is not the few times the agency brings to light a valid point, but the constant, pervasive hate speech that permeates almost every broadcast. And this has nothing to do with the fact that Fox News is right leaning or if you believe other news agencies to be left leaning. If you truly consider yourself above the lies and hate speech, you would participate in the boycott.

  10. adriana says

thank you for posting the list of sponsors. I will write to them and I WONT buy from them until they drop Lou Dobbs.
This is going to our blogs and to our many friends connecting to us so CNN will take us seriously.

  11. Ranjana says

The rightists, brainwashed by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin, Laura Ingram, Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly are getting truly scary. Their “free speech” is destructive, and blatantly racist. I am shocked that there are no laws against such bigoted viewpoints on national television. Please everyone, take the time to write to the sponsors and be serious about boycotting their products.

  12. says

You left-coasters are soooo cute when you get self-righteous.

Go ahead and boycott. You don’t watch anything but news programs that lean left, anyway. If you would take some time to learn that there *are* those on the right who want to create dialogue instead of “fear-mongering” (like “nobody died because Clinton lied?”), you would realize that Fox, while a bit over the top, does raise some important viewpoints.

You can’t tell me the left doesn’t have their own fear mongers and monster-shouters. Please, most of us are smarter and more aware of the world around us than that.

    Hello Carl,

I am Kameya Shows with OnStar Communications. I saw the above post and wanted to let you know that OnStar does not sponsor or advertise on The Rush Limbaugh Show and has not since 2003. We ask that you please remove OnStar from the post and the list of The Rush Limbaugh Show advertisers.

Scare tactics and attacks on character are sadly the most effective techniques when the alternative is to engage in meaningful discussion than might mean finding some level of agreement with those you have initially opposed. Since Obama likes to compromise on issues, it is hard for opponents to engage in deliberate discussion on the issues for fear that Obama might agree with them at some level and steal your thunder. If you fear compromise, all you can do is polarize.

I am going to try to double-up my use of these advertisers’ products in order to offset your misguided operation.
