President Barack Obama will face a daunting international scene in January as a direct consequence of George Bush’s ill-conceived adventure in Iraq. Having argued forcefully that the war should never have been fought, and having committed himself to a “responsible” withdrawal, Obama will indeed inherit responsibility for Iraq.
The Military Industrial Complex
President Eisenhower warned against the dangers of developing a military industrial complex. It appears that when all you have in your toolbox is hammers, everything looks like a nail. The articles below give a sense of the many ways we use all of the hammers we've invested in.
There is an “Alice-in-Wonderland” quality to the current debate on Iraq. As the war became increasingly unpopular after 2003, the Bush administration took to arguing that we couldn’t leave because it wasn’t going well. We had a duty to hang in there and give the Iraqis a chance to get on their feet. Those of […]
The recent escalation of violence between Israel and its Palestinian and Lebanese enemies illustrates yet again a perennial feature of this excruciating conflict: on both sides, those who refuse to compromise hold the trump cards. Both Hamas in Gaza and Hizbollah in Lebanon have the ability to seize the initiative and derail efforts to forge […]
ecause the treatment of detainees in the prison for “unlawful combatants” at the naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, was found by the Supreme Court to be contrary to both US law and international law, the facility has become an embarrassment that even the Bush administration wants to be closed, if they can find other […]
In my humble opinion, the biggest opportunity to demilitarize Europe in our lifetime was lost when the decision to expand rather than dissolve the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was made.
by Barbara Mullen — I haven’t cried about Vietnam in a long time but I have lately. I lament the fact that there are war casualties like me and my children everywhere in our country who get up every day trying to act as if a war hasn’t changed their lives forever.
In iconoclastic journalist Robert Scheer’s brilliantly titled new book “The Pornography of Power,” we get confirmation– in infuriating black and white—of rumors that have haunted the country on and off since September 11. For some of us, there’s disturbing new information too. Scheer begins by emphasizing the fear that surrounded neoconservatives as they grew up […]
Why shouldn’t there be a war memorial on the National Mall in Washington to commemorate those who have died in the Iraq war? It could be a simple concrete wall five stories high onto which the photographs of those killed in Iraq would be projected. After dark, somewhere between the illuminated Capitol and the Lincoln […]
Many people deny that the U.S. government presides over a global empire. If you speak of U.S. imperialism, they will fancy that you must be a decrepit Marxist-Leninist who has recently awakened after spending decades in a coma. Yet the facts cannot be denied, however much people’s ideology may predispose them to distort or obfuscate […]
Truth or Consequences was once a TV game show and a town in New Mexico. In the real world, there is always truth, and ignoring the truth has terrible consequences. In Vietnam, we tried to demonstrate that advanced technology could conquer Stone Age nationalism. Using guns that could fire thousands of bullets a minute, chemicals […]
The media, egged on by John McCain and his campaign, are going to twist the arm of Barack Obama until he cries “uncle” and admits the U.S. troop “surge” has worked in Iraq. So far, Obama has not cracked under the pressure and, for reasons of political expediency, admitted this dubious proposition. The smart political […]
It really makes the Iraq debate easy for John McCain when he throws around words like “win” and “victory” and “prevail” and “success” without really defining what they mean. A short time ago he was calling for American troops to remain in Iraq forever and that Obama was “naive” for suggesting otherwise. Now that the […]
by Ivan Eland — The chauvinistic American news media have focused on evil Iran’s missile tests and the indignant Bush administration reaction, while missing some key causes of the event.
