The students, members of the YouthBuild Charter School, have either directly experienced abuse inside of the L.A. County Jails or have loved ones who have experienced the abuse and will be presenting different models of civilian oversight and making the connections of why such oversight is necessary here in Los Angeles.
The Dandelion Risin’ Leadership Institute is a unique project that provides young people (ages 16-24) inside of the South L.A. and Boyle Heights YouthBuild Charter Schools the opportunity to build leadership while being involved in civic engagement strategies that uplift and empower their communities. Within the past three months, students from the Institute have presented testimony at the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors’ meeting and have held press conferences and marches/rallies in support of civilian oversight of the L.A. County Jails.
