Deportation Crisis: U.S.-Legislated Human Trafficking

Deportation CrisisIs the government of the United States engaging in human trafficking? The sad fact is that it is with respect to immigrant detention used to drive private profits.

A legislated, quota-based penal system has led to the unfair and inhumane detention of innocent men, women and children. This free public forum will spread awareness of where public tax dollars are really going.

Speakers will address wrongful detention, deplorable conditions and the pervasive use of solitary confinement as well as the upcoming $45 million expansion of the Adelanto Detention Center.

Sunday, November 2, 3 p.m.
Neighborhood Church
301 No. Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena

RSVP on Facebook here

Speakers include:

Arzate/Bravo Family, Community Organizers: Orlando Arzate was imprisoned after seeking asylum, and his nephew Luis Bravo suffered a very public arrest at the hands of ICE. They will be speaking despite their fear of retaliation from ICE.

Christina Fialho, Attorney and Executive Director of CIVIC: “We Will Not Be Silent”: Fialho is the co-founder and Executive Director of CIVIC, which builds and strengthens immigrant detention visitation programs and lobbies against the isolation and abuse of people in U.S. immigrant detention through visitation, independent monitoring, storytelling, and advocacy. Fialho will give an overview of local/national immigration detention landscape and the laws that have been created to increase the imprisonment of asylum seekers, victims of human tracking, and legal permanent residents with longstanding community ties.

Sarah Shourd, Author and Prisoner Rights Advocate: “Prolonged Solitary Confinement is the New Torture”. Shourd was arrested while hiking near the unmarked border between N. Iraq and Iran and spent 410 days in Solitary confinement. Since being wrongfully imprisoned herself, she has become an advocate for prisoners’ rights and has spoken out against the use of solitary confinement. She is one of the three co-authors of “A Sliver of Light: Three Americans Imprisoned in Iran.”

Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church is presenting this free forum in partnership with CIVIC (Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement), a national nonprofit that is working to end the isolation and abuse of people in U.S. immigration detention through visitation, independent monitoring and advocacy. It is presented in association with: ACLU, ICUJP, Justice Not Jails, LA Progressive and Friends of Adelanto.

About Hannah Petrie

As an ordained minister and liberal religious leader since 2001, Hannah Petrie's primary mission is to serve Unitarian Universalist congregations with distinction and extend our progressive values of inclusion, caring, and environmental justice beyond our walls to an increasingly uncertain and even hostile audience. On a local level, she is an activist for real change by influencing city councils to enact policies and ordinances that promote a more just and healthy community. She also community organizes and facilitates bridge-building relationships, supporting the rights of Muslim communities to exist in our country, preventing community violence and gang affiliation, and connecting the Wars on Drugs, Immigrants, and Terror. She publishes The Justice Hustle.
