The first primary is before us…metaphorically speaking. It’s next week. But the hoopla is at the breaking point so I thought we’d take a moment and look at this circus calmly.
Sure, let Trump keep pulling stuff out of his bag of infantile tricks. Just as long as we remember that, beneath his fun and games, there’s a rock solid bigot who’s sees Mexicans, Muslims, and blacks as the enemy.
Does it really matter which Republican wins the primary? The lineup is so grotesque if one of them becomes our next president we’re back in the Stone Age. It’s fine if Trump is the court jester …We need to be distracted from real threats like perpetual war, impending economic disaster, corporations replacing government through toxic trade bills like the TPP. Sure, let Trump keep pulling stuff out of his bag of infantile tricks. Just as long as we remember that, beneath his fun and games, there’s a rock solid bigot who’s sees Mexicans, Muslims, and blacks as the enemy. His pledge to make America great again is code for “making America white again.”
What other threatening killer can we compare him to?
He’s not Al Capone. That would be Chris Christie.
He’s not Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde. That would be Ben Carson.
He’s not Hitler; that would be Cruz, Rubio, and Carly Fiorina.
He’s Mussolini. He pouts like Mussolini. He gestures like him. He even looks like him.
And lest we buy the lie that Kasich and Jeb Bush are “moderates”, let’s remember that, not only did they give outrageous tax breaks to the rich and privatize education in their states, Kasich pushed through the legislation to give women “mandatory vaginal probes” before they could have a medical abortion, and Jeb Bush supported Stand-Your-Ground, the law that gives cops and gun nuts the right to kill young unarmed black men like Trevan Martin whenever the spirit moves them. They’re still doing it.
So much for the Republican lineup. But what about Hillary Clinton? We have to admit she sounds civilized. Her tight connection with the 1%, her lock in with Wall Street, her devotion to the permanent war economy is dwarfed by her skill in ducking the facts. Even the while Secretary of State, her insistence that we start war with Libya in 2011, are brushed aside by her irritating self confidence. We managed to kill Kaddafi whom she insisted was an imminent threat to our country when in reality for at least 20 years he consistently kissed up to us. We had between 2500 and 25000 casualties in that unnecessary war. Those numbers came from her office…. so we don't know how many people we lost. But we do know we won nothing in that war, the Libyans lost 1700 people including children, that country remains in ruin, destabilized, locked in an ongoing civil war. But Wall Street was satisfied with it and the arms industry was thrilled.
Nowhere in this mix is the will of the people of this country expressed or even considered. Nowhere do we go in the direction of a democracy of, by, and for the people. Which brings us to Bernie Sanders….the one hope in this cesspool of candidates. According to Hillary Clinton he is poetry and she is prose, meaning he’s a dreamer and she’s a doer. We put it differently. He is truth and she is fiction.
With us next Monday will be Lauren Steiner, a coordinator for the Sanders campaign in Los Angeles. A long-time, effective progressive activist, there is very little she hasn't been through or doesn’t know about the people’s movement from the days of Occupy to the Bernie Sander’s Campaign. She will be here next Monday morning to share that info with us and tell us how we can participate in election of the one candidate who will actually represent we the people.
