The anniversary of the coup in America is September 8, 1974, not January 6, 2021.

We are witnessing the aftermath of not pursuing the crimes Nixon committed as President of the United States. It established a precedent in which the crimes and corruption of the Trump Administration, committed in plain view, have gone unpunished. And if there are no indictments for Trump, no prison, no asset forfeiture for him, his co-conspirators, and his criminal accessories after the fact, why should anyone submit to the justice system?

What we are witnessing now are the result of generations of wealth concentration -which is antithetical to democracy -you cannot have one person, one vote while extreme wealth is concentrated into the hands of a few.

We are witnessing the lack of meaningful news reported by investigative journalists, as media has consolidated into a handful of companies and is now run for profit.

This means stories that are based in conflict and outlandishness take center stage, instead of stories about the erosion of democracy, growing wealth inequality, catastrophic climate change, racial injustice, healthcare, and the attack on voting rights.

Frank Zappa was quoted to say “Politics is the entertainment division of the military-industrial complex.” Well, the news is now the entertainment division of the American political system.

We are witnessing Members of Congress behaving like pathologically insane circus clowns, who draw media attention with outlandish lying, coded racism, and fanning the flames of hate and fear among their base.

Unqualified Members such as Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Josh Hawley, Louis Gohmert, Kevin McCarthy, Tom Cotton, Matt Gaetz, and others spread propaganda, and divide America while they obstruct law and policy intended to help average Americans. Make no mistake -they are perfectly fine with destroying the American system in exchange for media attention and big donations.

We are witnessing an America that has lost its way. Masses of willfully ignorant mindlessly screaming "Build the Wall", "Lock Her Up", or "Let's Go Brandon" -because that's what Fox 'News', Trump, or others tell them to do. They blindly parrot nonsense instead of considering why an obscenely wealthy group of 400 Americans have amassed more wealth than the combined savings of 150 million Americans.

They yell "Government out of my healthcare" -but do not question why the American system is the most expensive out of 17 nations -and is the worst in patient outcomes. They demand that "Critical Race Theory" is not taught in schools, without thinking that in authoritarian governments, the first thing to go after liberty is historical truth.

They protest having to wear masks to protect their families, communities, and first responders because, 'freedumb', apparently means having no responsibility for others. They claim mandatory vaccines, which have eradicated measles, smallpox, and polio are government overreach, however, government getting in between a woman and her doctor about a deeply personal reproductive decision is just fine. They claim they are 'pro-life' and are also for the proliferation of assault weapons, everywhere, for anyone.

The coup did not start on January 6, 2021, it started long ago through GOP policies that made the wealthy -wealthier, turned higher education into a system of economic tyranny driven by student debt, privatization, and deregulation -'trickle-down free market' nonsense.

It started when Nixon rode off into the sunset with no punishment for his assault on justice and democracy. It was under siege when Reagan was responsible for attacks on Unions, people of color, the impoverished, the education system, and the Iran-Contra affair. It continued through Bush/Cheney lying to the world about a false premise for the invasion of Iraq and then taking the US economy to the brink of collapse. It was furthered by the abhorrent SCOTUS decision equating money with speech. And it continued through the Trump Administration -their pattern of crimes, corruption, and deep incompetence which not only led to needless death and suffering during the pandemic but also led to a violent insurrection.

To this day Trump remains free from indictments or consequences for himself, his co-conspirators, and accessories after the fact.

Now, America is deeply divided in a very volatile world. Instead of considering just what the American future should look like, are we asking the questions - what should the future of democracy and justice be? Where should America prioritize and invest as a society? Education? Healthcare? Infrastructure? Expanding and protecting Voting Rights? No.

People are simply yelling over one another about masks while wondering about the next season of Dancing With the Stars, or who is dating which Kardashian.

While we reflect today on the horror, violence, and lives lost on January 6, 2021, the coup began with the pardon of Nixon on September 8, 1974. It was reinforced with the inauguration of Reagan on January 20, 1981 and continues unabated today.
