Every Friday the LA Progressive features a comment that was particularly noteworthy. This week we are featuring a comment submitted by Bob in response to a press release distributed by Marcy Winograd. Bob writes:
I enjoy your email newsletters, but this is one of those “with all due respect” comments:
Not all of us Jews agree with the Winograd faction (or whatever you want to call it), which routinely finds fault with Israel over its actions in a war that has been going on for more than 60 years. I find this history tragic, in that neither side can achieve what it actually would like to achieve, and the mindsets of the opposing sides are very different. There is a legitimate argument over the wisdom, morality, and even strategical considerations involving the Israeli operation, but to criticize Israel for responding to a never-ending series of attacks by high explosives against its population, without ever paying lip service to the destruction and death suffered by Israelis, is to have a remarkable double standard.
Even Marc Cooper, who is extremely critical of the Israeli operation (about the nicest thing he called it was “idiotic”), posted a link to an article by an American resident of Sderot, explaining what it is like to live under the constant threat of being blown up — they have literally a 15 second warning to find shelter before a rocket with ten pounds of high explosive lands somewhere in the area.
I’m not going to dust off those arguments about what we would do if Riverside or Tijuana were shooting rockets at us, but I would suggest that the world and the fringies on the American left have become extremely insensitive to the killing of Jews — where were they when Israel sent an envoy to Egypt asking for help in getting Hamas to stop shooting rockets at them? This fight could have been prevented right then (just a few weeks ago). Where is the peace faction when the killing is of Israelis?
Other than that, I join with you in celebrating the Obama inauguration and hoping for better times.
