AAmmon Bundy is part of the family of ranchers who occupied a National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, touching off a prolonged standoff, the death of a follower, and an unsuccessful federal prosecution (the jury found Not Guilty). He has previously expressed views characteristic of the extreme right wing, such as extreme hostility to government, and a conviction that we are “a Christian nation.”

Lately he has been criticizing Trump’s rhetoric and policies regarding immigration, arguing that Christianity teaches us that we should welcome and support noncriminal immigrants.

He hasn’t abandoned his right-wing views. His hostility to government includes opposition to any government aid for them. What he wants is for the Christian people of this Christian nation to take up the obligation to welcome them and care for them. He has predictably gotten a lot of negative reactions from his erstwhile supporters, but he’s also gotten support.
