Bruce Karsh, the billionaire president of Oaktree Capital Management, is poised to sell the LA Times to the Koch Brothers, the billionaire brothers whose company is the fifth largest contributor to air pollution and the number one funder of climate change deniers. They have used their foundations, think tanks, astroturf groups and ALEC to try to destroy Barack Obama, unions, public education, the minimum wage and other social programs, and now they are trying to take over media directly. If they gain control of the LA Times, they will turn our revered newspaper into just another propaganda vehicle in their quest to destroy the environment and the middle class.
Join us for a rally and march to tell Bruce Karsh in his own neighborhood that this is more than one of his run of the mill distressed debt sales. The decision to sell the LA Times to the Koch Brothers threatens our city and our very democracy, which depends upon a vibrant and independent press. Please invite your friends. We need a big showing to let him know that this is important to many people, not just activists.
Will Rogers Memorial Park, 9650 Sunset Blvd., Beverly Hills
(across from The Beverly Hills Hotel)
Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm
Come with signs that say “Bruce Karsh, please don’t sell the LA Times to the Kochs” and “Bruce Karsh, our democracy is not for sale” and any other clever messages you’d like to share with him. We will start with a rally and press conference at the park and then march half a mile up Benedict Canyon Drive to the corner of Tower Road, where thousands of commuters stuck in rush hour traffic will see our signs and hear our chants. We will also hire two celebrity home tour buses for those of you who can’t or don’t want to walk. Several people will also be stationed outside his house a half a mile further up the road.
Speakers include Kathay Feng, Executive Director of California Common Cause and others TBA. Also, Felonious Ax from “The Billionaires” just returned from the Koch Brothers annual confab in Palm Springs and will speak about their exciting plans for our paper. (Map of event location)
