Judging the Judges November 2014

Judging the Judges June 2018

If you are a registered voter in the County of Los Angeles, you have likely received your Official Sample Ballot for the upcoming June 5, 2018 Primary Election. If you haven't received it you should contact the Los Angeles County Registrar or go to lavote.net.

Along with those running for political office, there is also a list of judicial candidates. Many voters may not know that the Los Angeles County Bar Association rates each judge and posts the ratings on the LA County Bar Association website. You can access those ratings by clicking here.

In 2018, there are 20 candidates seeking to be seated as a superior court judge. The LA Progressive endorsements are as follows:

Office 4 - A. Veronica Sauceda
Office 16 - Sydne Michel
Office 20 - Mary Ann Escalante or Wendy Segall
Office 60 - Holly L. Hancock
Office 63 - Malcolm H. Mackey
Office 67 - Onica Valle Cole
Office 71 - Danielle R.A. Gibbons
Office 113 - Javier Perez
Office 118 - David Diamond
Office 126 - Rene Caldwell Gilbertson
Office 146 - Armondo Duron

There are a couple of other sites that contain recommendations. Former California State Assembly Rep Jackie Goldberg offers advice here.

Each of the candidates running in the judicial race is also rated by the Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA). The LA County Bar convenes an election evaluation committee that works with the LACBA staff to publicize the evaluations made by the committee.

The Judicial Elections Evaluation Committee evaluates each candidate and gives them one of the following ratings:

Exceptionally Well Qualified - To be “Exceptionally Well Qualified,” the candidate must possess qualities and attributes considered to be of remarkable or extraordinary superiority so the candidate is deemed fit to perform the judicial function with distinction.

Well Qualified - To be “Well Qualified,” the candidate must possess professional ability, experience, competence, integrity, and temperament indicative of superior fitness to perform the judicial function with a high degree of skill and effectiveness.

Qualified - To be “Qualified,” the candidate must possess professional ability, experience, competence, integrity, and temperament indicative of fitness to perform the judicial function satisfactorily.

Not Qualified - To be “Not Qualified,” the candidate lacks one or more of the qualities of professional ability, experience, competence, integrity, and temperament indicative of fitness to perform the judicial function satisfactorily.

Following are the ratings issued by the 2018 Judicial Elections Evaluation committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association on April 25, 2016. There is also a link provided for each of the superior court offices that will provide you with additional information on each of the candidates.
