Dear Mr President,
The late-night comics have had a lot of fun with your Tim Apple speech last week:
“You’re doing things that I really wanted you to do right from the beginning. I used to say, ‘Tim, you gotta start doing it here,’ and you really have, you’ve really put a big investment in our country. We really appreciate it very much, Tim Apple.”
More interesting than the trivial slip – which at most revealed your pretense of familiarity with Tim Cook – was your claim of superior business acumen.
But more interesting than the trivial slip – which at most revealed your pretense of familiarity with Tim Cook – was your claim of superior business acumen. You “used to” (as if repeatedly) counsel him “right from the beginning” (thus way before Cook would have thought about it himself) that he should “start” hiring American workers. Cook’s reward is that “We” (that is, you) appreciate it.
The same pattern was revealed in a speech you made just a year ago before business leaders including Lockheed-Martin CEO, Marillyn Hewson:
“Marillyn Lockheed, the leading woman’s business executive in this country, according to many. And we buy billions and billions of dollars’ worth of that beautiful F-35. It’s stealth. You cannot see it. Is that correct? Better be correct, . . . right?”
Again, the flubbed name grabbed the attention. But again, the interesting part is that while betraying your slippery grasp on simple facts (like the names of people standing next to you), you claim command of (and screw up) technical facts (like what “stealth” means for a plane) and then attempt to humble your human exhibit with an assertion of your authority (“Better be, . . . right?”).
And they take it, don’t they? Cook later humorously altered his Twitter name, and a faint glimmer of non-recognition had passed over Hewson’s countenance, but they did not correct you at the time. They let you rename them, and they pretended to accept your wisdom – just as the people you have bullied all your life have accepted the false realities you have proclaimed into existence.
Maybe if you just read . . .
Never mind. Just try to get the names right.
