Starting on June 9, the House Select Committee will hold hearings on the 1/6 Insurrection, what led up to it, how it was planned, how it was implemented, who is responsible, and who must be punished. It is quite likely that the evidence presented will pin ultimate responsibility directly on Donald Trump and his sycophants. Will these Republican insurrectionists accept responsibility, or will they seek to stage another insurrection to take over the government, and impose a Trumpocracy on our country? Or will it happen early next year after they take over the Senate and House as a result of the November midterm elections?

Biden will be well into his 80s when the next Presidential election occurs in 2024, and I don’t believe that he will run for reelection. And it is critical that the GOP does not take over Congress as a result of the midterms. What can be done to prevent this takeover from happening?

I was a Republican for the first half of my life, from a Connecticut Republican family. I even was the Legislative Assistant to a Republican Congressman when I was in my 20s. But the GOP is now a Trump-following cult, with the exception of a few Members of Congress like Liz Cheney, and a number of low information voters who are still Republicans even though they hate Trump. The now not-so-Grand Old Party must be destroyed, and a new conservative-oriented party created which is not beholden to Trump and his pro-Russia followers. Conservative pundits like Tucker Carlson must be driven from the airways, and extreme right wing news sites like NewsMax must be closed down as threats to democracy.

31 Republican Senators and 57 Republican House Members have voted against giving emergency aid to Ukraine to fight Russia. And Senator Rand Paul has stalled single-handedly giving the latest aid to Ukraine. Are they “patriots” or traitors to America?

How can this be done?

After the eight or more hearings of the Select Committee are concluded by the end of June, 2022, and the Committee publishes its report on the Insurrection, President Biden must take firm action to suspend the GOP from further political activity by implementing the Insurrection Act and declaring martial law in states that supported Trump and his Trumpsters.

The Insurrection Act of 1807 empowers the President to deploy the U.S. Military and federalized National Guard troops within the U.S. to suppress civil disorder, insurrection, or rebellion. The Act is a “statutory exception” to the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which restricts the use of military personnel under federal command for law enforcement purposes within the U.S. The President must first issue a proclamation ordering the insurgents, in this case the Republicans, to disperse.

The law currently reads as follows:

“Whenever the President considers that unlawful obstructions, combinations, or assemblages, or rebellion against the authority of the United States, make it impracticable to enforce the laws of the United States in any State by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, he may call into Federal service such of the militia of any State, and use such of the armed forces, as he considers necessary to enforce those laws or suppress the rebellion.”

The Act has been used 27 times, including enforcement of court-ordered desegregation and to suppress riots such as the 1992 L.A. riots. The individual states do not have to request the implementation of the Act beforehand.

Biden’s justification: clear evidence that Trump and his henchmen, including a number of Republicans in Congress, were directly involved in trying to overthrow the results of the validly-run 2020 Presidential election, and the American government.

Following this action, Biden could close down the NRA and declare all assault weapons illegal to own, impose strict measures to combat global warming, void the Supreme Court’s expected ruling declaring abortion illegal by issuing a Presidential decree, require that every American be vaccinated or be quarantined in their homes, impose stock market restrictions to prevent extreme market manipulations by hedge fund operators, and work to impose a global prohibition of the purchase of Russian oil and natural gas.

My recommendation may sound extreme, but our democracy is now under great threat from Trumpster GOP politicians.
