Dr. Rick Bright

Listening to whistleblower Dr. Rick Bright of the National Institutes of Health testify on Thursday before the House Subcommittee on Health of the Energy and Commerce Committee, I recalled the dramatic testimony of the Jeff Daniels character in the cable show "Newsroom". He was testifying about the climate crisis, and he was asked when it would be too late to make the necessary changes to control global warming. His answer:" it is already too late; we are doomed".

Trump's incompetence and greed to win at all costs may kill most if not all of us ultimately, especially people as old as me. Thank you, Donnie, for killing me and perhaps members of my family.

Dr. Bright seemed to be saying that Trump's two-month delay in implementing coronavirus testing and determining who was exposed may make it too late for the the United States EVER to recover from the virus in a meaningful way. In other words, Trump's incompetence and greed to win at all costs may kill most if not all of us ultimately, especially people as old as me. Thank you, Donnie, for killing me and perhaps members of my family.

This recalls the conduct of President Herbert Hoover, who was Coolidge's Secretary of Commerce before he became President in 1929. A little over six months after he was inaugurated, the October, 1929 crash occurred, which led to the Great Depression, which the U.S. did not fully recover from until World War II. Hoover's solution to the problem was to let business work its way out of the crash and the Depression; he believed the government should stay out of the way.

FDR, when he came into office in 1933, got the federal government to take strong and firm action with the New Deal to help the economy recover. So did Obama during the Great Recession. Trump, on the other hand, listens to Fox News and Newt Gingrich (rather than working as President to resolve the virus crisis) and then bloviates egomaniac nonsense.

If we are lucky, Trump will be gone on January 21, 2021, a little over eight months from now. If we are really lucky, he will be gone before that: he will be infected by the virus and die; he will be impeached again; the 25th Amendment will be invoked, or he will resign like Nixon did. I remember after Obama was elected in early November, 2008 during the midst of the meltdown, we had to wait two and a half months before Obama was inaugurated. Fortunately the Bush Administration cooperated with the transition of power before January 21, 2008. Will Trump?

If Trump somehow is elected for four more years, there really is no hope for our democracy. It took Hitler only 19 months to go from being an appointed Chancellor of Germany to becoming a dictator and starting his plans to exterminate the Jews.

I pray every night for my family and myself that it is not too late. Dr. Bright stated in his testimony that the U.S faces "the darkest winter in modern history", and "unprecedented illness and death".
