On Monday, October 17, 2016, the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley will hold our 14th Annual Women for Racial Justice Breakfast, and will be held from 7:00 am to 9:00 am at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel.
Honoring and recognizing the talent and influence of women leaders has been at the heart of the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley since our beginning in 1905. It is with great excitement to announce that the YWCA’s 2016 Racial Justice Award recipient is Melina Abdullah, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of Pan-African Studies at California State University, Los Angeles as well as the immediate past campus president and current Chair of the Council for Affirmative Action for the California Faculty Association. She was appointed to the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission in 2014 and is a recognized expert on race relations.
Dr. Abdullah is a member of the California State University Chancellor’s Taskforce for the Advancement of Ethnic Studies and also serves on leadership boards for the Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute; Black Community, Clergy, and Labor Alliance; Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education; and The Reverence Wellness Salon. She serves on the leadership team for #BlackLivesMatter and is committed to ending law enforcement violence towards all people, specifically people of color. She is active in community organizing, and frequently delivers public lectures and contributes to radio news programs, print, and on-line media. Dr. Abdullah is a member of the Beautiful Struggle collective and co-hosts/co-produces a weekly radio show of the same name which airs on KPFK 90.7 FM and streams worldwide. The award will be presented to her at the 14th Annual Women for Racial Justice Breakfast on Monday, October 17, 2016.
This year, our keynote speaker will be Robert K. Ross, M.D., President and CEO of the California Endowment as the keynote speaker for this year’s event. The California Endowment is a health foundation established in 1996 to address the health needs of Californians. Dr. Ross has an extensive background in health philanthropy, as a public health executive, and as a clinician. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pediatrics, served on the President’s Summit for America’s Future, and as chairman of the national Boost for Kids Initiative.
During his tenure at The California Endowment, the foundation has focused on the health needs of underserved Californians by championing health coverage for all children, reducing childhood obesity, strengthening the capacity of community health centers, improving health services for farm worker and ex‐offender populations, and strengthening the pipeline for bringing racial and ethnic diversity to the health professions. Recently, he has helped bring greater philanthropic attention to the health and well‐being of people of color across California and the nation.
