Friday Feedback: Ayn Rand's Heaven

Each week, the editor’s of LA Progressive pick what they regard as a particularly insightful comment from one of our readers, both to draw attention to one particular reader’s thoughts and to encourage more readers to weigh in with their opinions. This week’s pithy "Feedback Friday" response comes from Nate Briggs, who commented on Tom Hall's "Ayn Rand's Heaven."

What Ayn Rand offered up was the product of a deeply disturbed mind. A pathological narcissist who arrived at a kind of Feral Darwinism: worshipping the Alpha element in society. Alpha: which, offers nothing but death and destruction.

While talking endlessly about “rationalism” her works are accumulations of huge puffs of vehement emotion. All grievance, bitterness, parsimony, and fury. They appeal to the adolescent, unformed mind. So I think most committed Randists are still living in Mommy’s basement. Once you grow up and want to be taken seriously in the world you leave a lot of that shit behind.

After all, she argues that the highest form of human interaction is rape. She instructs us all to aspire to the extreme self-determination and primal ruthlessness of rapists. “Take what you want, and leave ’em bleeding….” And, if humankind had evolved according to her theories, there wouldn’t be any humankind. I’m not sure I agree that she created a religion. But, as a philosophy, it’s simply not sustainable. If people behaved the way Ayn Rand thought they did, no one would have survived.
