Why Did the Democrats Fail?—Walter Moss

Each week, the editor’s of LA Progressive pick what they regard as a particularly insightful comment from one of our readers, both to draw attention to one particular reader’s thoughts and to encourage more readers to weigh in with their opinions. This week’s pithy "Feedback Friday" response comes from Dee Steel, who commented on Walter Moss's "Why Did the Democrats Fail?"

From the beginning Clinton and the DNC assumed she would win. When a showman, a TV personality with diminishing ratings, was her opponent, they were very confident. Their focus was on those most like themselves. They assumed raising the boat with education would solve all problems. They did not know America. From my experience they did not know even white college educated women. I voted for her only because I disliked Trump more.

Why was she running??? Every time I asked I would get a shoulder shrug. No one appeared to know. My best guess was I AM WOMAN, VOTE FOR ME. This did not address our issues. It did not address our changing country and culture. It did not address our unlimited choice in media that could misinform us. It did not address loss of jobs that will probably never return. Many will be automated. Going from a coal and oil based economy to a solar and energy efficient one requires new skills, knowledge and experience, but still not college.

None of this was addressed by HRC. This is the population that did not vote for her, but for Trump. WHY? DNC does not know because they did not ask. They did not go to areas not supportive of HRC because it was not profitable. All remember the huge number of daily emails asking for money from candidates who would not represent us because we were not their constituents. The focus was money, not securing votes by contacting and speaking with voters.

We are now in a horrible mess. Our Constitution and unifying traditions are in tatters. Leadership appears more concerned with remaining in control than in their real job of focusing on our needs and citizen desires. The focus is not always the “WE THE PEOPLE” in the Preamble of our Constitution.

It will take lots of work and putting away our social media toys and talking in person with REAL people. All citizens will need to recommit to our country. We will need to follow our Constitution even if it costs money or makes us personally uncomfortable. We need to follow our immigration laws even when it is hard and emotional to do.
NB: Using fraudulent documents is a crime. Someone is a victim of ID theft for someone to use our documents fraudulently. Check the fine print on your CDL to see limitations on its use as identification.

We can get our country back, but it will take PERSONAL commitment and work. We need to actively participate in our governance. We need to hold our elected officials in all levels accountable. Never again should we let a political party leadership select our national candidate and only request large amounts of money to attain their goals.

And yes, the DNC needs to get rid of super delegates. If DEMS pride themselves in being the party of the people, then DEMS need to listen to the people. This last election cycle they did not and now all citizens are paying the price.
