The independent perspective gets short shrift in the media, true enough. But that’s because there isn’t one — there are two three or twenty-three independent perspectives. So don’t put the blame on the media. Many analysts have identified two sizable groups not comfortable with the D v R choice — “libertarian” types who oppose government interference in both social issues and economic affairs, and so-called populists who think gov’t should regulate both the economy and morals.

The first group has a party that fits their views but don’t support it often because it’s too weak, the latter haven’t had a party though Trump hits some of their talking points — hypocritically on the economy front.

Then there are now many ‘independents’ who are Republicans in ideology but can’t stomach Trump, and there are longtime Democrats who can’t handle gay marriage or abortion on demand. Media can’t give voice to everyone.
