Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green New Deal” would not include nuclear energy. Advocates for nuclear could stymie the new congresswoman’s efforts.

Harvey’s piece is well-timed. Today’s Washington Post ran a multi-section advocacy forum titled, “How we can combat climate change,” subtitled, “The world has until 2030 to drastically cut our emissions. Where do we begin?”

One section advocates for continued operation of existing nuclear power plants — its author’s organizational affiliation will surprise you. The Post’s editors wait til the forum’s final section to let Varshini Prakash, founder and spokeswoman of the Sunrise Movement, present advocacy to “Pass a Green New Deal.”

As Harvey suggests, Nancy Pelosi’s intransigent opposition to placing the Democratic Party in the forefront of a Green New Deal instantly became problematic. I believe it guarantees that young independent voters who flocked to Bernie Sanders in 2016 will remain independents, with renewed disgust at the Corporate Democratic Establishment.
