A week ago, the LA Progressive published a “Feedback Friday” piece claiming that I am a Trump supporter. I’m not sure where to begin in responding to such a preposterous lie. I’ve been consistently denouncing Republicans for 50 years. I’ve always denounced Trump. I’m co-founder and national coordinator of an organization, RootsAction.org, that has worked for impeachment of Trump ever since Inauguration Day.
The opening two sentences of the smear effort conveyed its essence, completely unhinged from reality. “I applaud LA Progressive for continuing to publish the essays of Trump zealot Norman Solomon,” he wrote. “It is good for the progressive community to see what the Trump 2020 re-election campaign is up to.”
While of course I’d advocate for any Democratic nominee in 2020 against the odious Trump, we shouldn’t pretend that Biden is a progressive candidate
At first glance, what spurred the writer (a guy named Hall) into his extreme fabrication was my article “MoveOn’s Phony New Campaign for ‘Protecting Whistleblowers’.” He likes MoveOn and doesn’t want to see it criticized.
But in his last paragraph, Hall gave away an underlying grudge—writing that my offending article came “after months of hammering at Biden.”
Yes, I’ve been “hammering at Biden” with numerous articles, entirely based on his record. While of course I’d advocate for any Democratic nominee in 2020 against the odious Trump, we shouldn’t pretend that Biden is a progressive candidate—and we’d be fooling ourselves to believe he’d be a formidable candidate against Trump.
Disagreements are one thing. Accusations disconnected from reality are another. One of the many qualities that should clearly distinguish progressives from our right-wing adversaries is that we take facts seriously—and we don’t engage in smears.
