Each week, LA Progressive’s editors pick what they regard as a particularly insightful comment from one of our readers, both to draw attention to one particular reader’s thoughts and to encourage more readers to weigh in with their opinions. This week’s pithy "Feedback Friday" response comes from James, who commented on the article by Charles Jaco, "School Shooters Are White, So Why Is Betsy DeVos Punishing Black Kids?

Punishing Black Kids

Growing up in the 40’s and 50’s I noted principals and teachers ran schools and were responsible for the educating of children and the board of education was made up mostly of people who came out of the education system and it was a small group providing support for the schools. They comprised probably less than five percent of the budget and consumed minimal office space. When I graduated from trade technical college with a AS Degree in Electronic Engineering Technician program and paid 12 dollars for registration and another hundred or so for books and 6 dollars a month for parking,

Today, due to a burgeoning administration that has little or nothing to do with classroom activities we spend more than 30 percent of our education budget on administrative activities and stuff that has nothing to do with the classroom and today those in administration don’t support the principals and teachers, they dictate policy and spend countless resources justifying their existence.

Today students pay 43 dollars a unit and are hardly able to finish community college without encountering some debt. Couple that with predatory lending policies and egregious education mandates that have little to do with education and you enter the maze of public education where only the strong survive. There are no real standards or policies that assist the students through the maze and the interest rates and loan policies resemble pay day loan companies, with no standards or accountability for lenders.

We are destroying our public schools with reckless privatizing by Betsy DeVos diverting funds to private institutions

The sad commentary on the whole mess is that character or integrity are no longer prized commodities. It’s let’s make a deal time. Someone has said that, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” And its roots are deepening in our nation and “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

We are destroying our public schools with reckless privatizing by Betsy DeVos diverting funds to private institutions and when they rip off students she creates mayhem in our schools and communities by denying students the right to sue these predatory institutions; like Trump University.

We destroy the lives of our students and community members by recklessly supporting the NRA, whose lobbyists flood our political arena with unrestricted funds and handcuff legislators who allow them to inundate our communities with every kind of weapon imaginable including assault rifles and they conclude that what will make our schools and communities safer is more guns.

When keeping my position and winning elections becomes more important than serving my electorate, democracy fails and politicians become an enigma, ineffective and impotent to bring about meaningful change. These abuses must not continue; otherwise our political process fails and our so call democracy is reduced to demagoguery and our nation with all its resources diminishes to third world status.
