Capitalism Under Trump

Each week, LA Progressive’s editors pick what they regard as a particularly insightful comment from one of our readers, both to draw attention to one particular reader’s thoughts and to encourage more readers to weigh in with their opinions. This week’s pithy "Feedback Friday" response comes from Maureen Cruise, who commented on the article by Sharon Kyle's, “Capitalism Under Trump”.

Despite the fact that 70% of our health care costs are tax payer funded, nine people a day die in California because they cannot access adequate health care. Diabetics whose insulin costs have sky rocketed endure lifelong disability due to avoidable amputations. 7,000 amputations in California last year. An outrageously high number, unheard of in other countries.

The US ranks #1 among wealthy nations in preventable deaths and suffers elevated rates of morbidity. We are 76th in maternal child health. Our bodies are being used used as profit centers for Wall Street shareholders.

This systemic malady has a legislative cure. The Healthy California Bill SB562 was shelved by California Assembly Speaker Rendon preventing it from going through the usual democratic process of open consideration and debate. Contrary to the continuous and deliberate political disinformation and media misrepresentations, this single payer proposal has a financial plan and analysis waiting to be added.

Shelving the bill prevents any additions, amendments or even discussion of this very important legislation. While expanding services and including all residents, SB 562 would save our state $37 billion dollars by removing the for profit insurance industry, streamlining administration and providing the ability for the state to negotiate and set drug prices and hospital charges. The money needed is already in the system but is being siphoned off of health care delivery and funneled into private profits.

All over the world, variations of this system have been working for decades, saving money, lowering costs and resulting in better health outcomes for populations. Single Payer SB562 would save homes, bank accounts, limbs and lives by removing profit and allowing free choice of provider and universal access to high quality care. SB562 eliminates out of pocket costs; no premium, no copays, no deductibles, no networks, no myriad of insurance plans, no denials of necessary care.

Please educate yourselves and call your legislators. Don’t ask them if they support single payer (they all give lip service to this). Ask them what they are doing about moving SB562 forward to be considered and debated openly….Is it on their website? Do they hold townhalls for discussion? What are their advocacy efforts?

So far we have absolutely no representation from any of the 120 electeds in Sacramento. SB562 is not a policy problem, nor a funding mystery. Read the legislation and it’s financing proposal at https://www.healthycaliforniaact.org. We have a serious political problem severely impacting the well being of our population. We have no genuine political representation in Sacramento. That must change now…with SB562. Free the bill. Have public discussions. Make our legislators accountable. Call them…everyday.

The status quo seems to work for narrow political self interests and for the party machines. But it is killing the rest of us, literally. FREE SB562!
