Each week, LA Progressive’s editors pick what they regard as a particularly insightful comment from one of our readers, both to draw attention to one particular reader’s thoughts and to encourage more readers to weigh in with their opinions. This week’s pithy "Feedback Friday" response comes from Larry Wines, who commented on the article by Norman Solomon, ""Joe Biden: Puffery vs. Reality."

Joe Biden Reality

There is, indeed, a lot of headless Chicken Little scurrying in high places over the wave of truly progressive candidates. Bernie is the prime target of the so-called Centrists just as he was in 2016, and now as then, it isn’t just about policy.

Bernie is the usurping outsider who wasn’t part of the mutual support society who glad-handed and introduced each other to campaign cash atm’s from the warconomy, Big Oil, Bankster, Big Data, Big Pharma, and other rich oligarchs of the over-merged, workforce-reducing, corporatocracy.

Enough of us have endured the excruciating performances of Democratic centrists in office. We know they govern as “Republican Light” budget hawks on everything but evermore defense spending.

These Centrists are — knowingly or not — shills for the paradigm of corporate hegemony.

Other comments here get into why the Dems lose if the same fix is in for Joe Biden, and is annointed as Hillary was.

Let’s add one more compelling, and I believe, determinative factor:

All those millenials who overwhelmingly register as independents are now the largest voting bloc. They are very likely, based on all the key issues, to join with progressives of all ages in 2020. And that means they’ll fragment among the progressive candidates, with female candidates drawing a disproportionate share of the women’s vote.

The obvious strategy for Biden is to collect a plurality of old reliable Dems and take the nomination with the help of establishment Dems, including those in corporste Big Media.

But here’s the thing: enough of us have endured the excruciating performances of Democratic centrists in office. We know they govern as “Republican Light” budget hawks on everything but evermore defense spending. And some of us will take Republicans who are easy to oppose and vilify, over Corporste Dems who get cover for everything they do.

It follows that a genuine progressive candidate will foment enthusiasm and high voter turnout. But an establishment / corporate Dem will cause despair that brings low turnout. Down-ballot races will be lost, Trump will get re-elected, and an entire generation will be permanently disenchanted with a phony, corporate-shill, Democratic Party.
