Does Your Representative Support Impeachment?

Each week, LA Progressive’s editors pick what they regard as a particularly insightful comment from one of our readers, both to draw attention to one particular reader’s thoughts and to encourage more readers to weigh in with their opinions. This week’s pithy "Feedback Friday" response comes from Julius Galacki, who commented on the article by LA Progressive Publisher Sharon Kyle, "Does Your Representative Support Impeachment?"

I think it’s far more important to get Trump out of office, as well as not replace him with Mike Pence – who may not be the overt crook that Trump has been his entire adult life, but certainly is morally compromised as he has aided and abetted the Trump presidency. Impeachment will NOT get Trump out of office as he would never be convicted in the Republican controlled Senate and actually removed from office.

And of course, Trump would never resign. Moreover, I’ve always seen the Russia-gate as a weak case – it’s full of holes when you look at actual facts – and it existed as a useful tool for establishment Democrats to deflect from their role in the neo-liberal policies and the nomination of Hilary Clinton that so helped in the election of Donald Trump (in addition to some voters’ racism and Republican led voter suppression).

Trump is a terrible president because of his terrible and/or stupid and/or cruel policies as well as his profiting from the presidency while in office (other presidents wait til they’re out of office to cash in). So an impeachment case will rest solely on obstruction of justice. While there are solid examples of that, it won’t be enough to sway those independents who will respond with sympathy for Trump, but otherwise may actually turn away from him in an election.

What I’m saying is, the best way to get rid of Trump is beat him at the ballot box hammering home how his policies have hurt workers economically while simultaneously offering people a better life with such policies as medicare for all, $15 an hour minimum wage, etc., i.e. everything Bernie Sanders actually means when he promises them.
