For Republicans, minorities and women are not equal to white men; not in any way, shape or form. Despite what Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, all men are created equal,” Republicans just can’t accept that in the eyes of the law all are equal.
In Steven Spielberg’s new movie “Lincoln,” the 16th president is shown explaining equality to two soldiers by citing a 2,000 year-old common notion from the Greek mathematician Euclid, “Things which are equal to the same thing are also equal to one another.” Lincoln was in the fight of his life trying everything possible to end the Civil War while at the same time trying to get the House of Representatives to pass the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. FInally, on January 31, 1865, the House passed the amendment which reads:
Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
In those years, Republicans were the “good guys” and Democrats the racist obstructionists. But it’s today that counts and Lincoln would be dismayed to learn that Republicans are now on the wrong side of history.
For Republicans, women can’t be trusted with stewardship over their own bodies and, thus, their own futures. They want politicians to control all the wombs in the nation. And, they don’t care if women are raped or hurt to make their point. Even if a pregnancy results from rape, even if carrying the fetus to full term kills the mother or if the woman’s own father has impregnated her, Republicans want to control and dominate women so they cannot legally obtain an abortion. How humiliating and debasing is it to be called a slut if a woman seeks birth control or help with health concerns from Planned Parenthood?
As you demand these things, Republicans, remember, rapists also want to control, dominate, humiliate and hurt their victims. Things which are equal to the same thing are also equal to one another.
God does not ordain birth through rape. “Personhood” comes not from the Bible but from the minds of Republican politicians. The Bible states in Genesis 2:7, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
‘Rithmetic, with the exception of the bottom line in business, has little importance to Republicans. For instance, by Romney ceding to President Obama 47% of the electorate, that meant the President only needed to convince an additional 3%+one person to vote for him while Romney needed to convince 50%+one person to win. What are the odds?
Unbelievably, Republicans, were convinced they would win because of the reaction by those attending Romney’s last few campaign appearances. The reaction was so loud and exhilarating that they were certain that Nate Silver’s thorough mathematic analysis of data was wrong. Math triumphed over Republican reverie as Silver’s projections accurately predicted winners.
Republicans are now in a quandary. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on “Meet the Press,” took sharp aim at Romney’s assertion that he lost the presidential election because of “gifts” that Democrats had doled out to women, college kids and minority voters. Said Graham, “We’re in a big hole, we’re not getting out of it by comments like that. When you’re in a hole, stop digging. He keeps digging.” The easiest thing to do, Senator Graham, jettison Romney.
The hardest thing? Learn a few things about math and 2012 America .
First, basic math: 2+2 = 4 and 3+1 = 4. So, 2+2 is = to 3+1. Going further, 2X2 = 4 and 5-1 = 4. All these examples are equal to one another. While we are dealing with different numbers and types of math – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division – it’s all math.
As in basic math there are many types of Americans who are equal to each other in the eyes of the law: a black female, a Chinese man, an American Indian child, a Southern redneck, a gay person, a Hispanic grandmother, a blind Lebanese, a Muslim cleric, a Kansas farmer, a ghetto rapper, a born-again Christian, an atheist, a millionaire, a homeless person and too many others to mention. This is the true face of America.
And finally, Republicans, I know this is going to be a stretch, but it also means accepting all women as full, trusted, integral and intelligent equals under the law.
