[dc]T/dc]he United Nations has a global goal that hopes to enforce a ban on the building of coal power plants by 2020. In LA, one of the ways to curb waste and emissions is with the use of technology. AI (artificial intelligence) is used to determine the emissions of a plant, and also take into consideration other critical data such as nearby infrastructure, optimal plant management, and highlighting areas of waste. While human intervention is often needed to help improve sustainability, AI will fill in the gaps on a larger scale.

A Move To Greener Energy

While Los Angeles has been moving away from coal power plants for some time, the natural gas plants also proved to be problematic when a bill was passed that forced the plants to look at alternative methods of cooling. At the time, water from the sea was used to cool the plants, which caused substantial damage to the oceanic infrastructure in the immediate area. Environmentalists were concerned about the far-reaching consequences of the dying ecosystems in the waters and how that would just filter down the line. Instead, air is used to cool the plants. LA is also making a strong move away from natural gas plants that rely on fossil fuels for the same reason, as the far-reaching consequences on the environment are too much to ignore.

Virtual Provides Inroads To Alternative Power

Virtual power plant technology has proven to be fruitful in Southern California. The plant dispatched energy to the power grid 250 times in 2018, which resulted in $1 million in savings for consumers. What sets the Southern California Edison apart from other power plants is that it relies on batteries to store power, where other plants place heavy reliance on fossil fuel storage. Not only is the battery storage more economical, but it’s also 100% renewable energy. This places the virtual power plant at a huge advantage from an infrastructure and environmental standpoint. It also opens the door to other means of generating power, with wind farms and solar fields popping up along the side of highways across the country. Industry experts, Kardie Equipment suggest that when these are maintained efficiently, the environmental benefits are even greater.

The Future Of Power Plants

Virtual power plants and renewable energy are undoubtedly the sources of inspiration for a West African commission of a cognitive power plant that will rely on AI (artificial intelligence) technology. Xcell Security House and Finance S.A teamed up to fund the power plant at a stellar $25MM contract, with Beyond Limits at the helm of the operation. While this power plant is to take shape in one of the developing countries in Africa, if successful, it has far-reaching consequences for energy production around the world. This is especially true for areas of the world that need drastic assistance with the efficiency of their power plants, not just those in West Africa.

Renewable energy targets, carbon neutrality, and sustainability figures are all starting to dawn in cities like Los Angeles. While the best use of current power plants may seem prudent, a more drastic step may call for a total overhaul of the way we generate power.
