Acne lesions happen when the hair follicles or pores on the skin become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Additionally a plugged follicle is the perfect place for bacteria to grow and create the red puss- filled bumps.

Most serious scarring is caused by the more severe forms of acne.

The best approach is to get treatment for acne soon after it appears to prevent further severe acne and more scarring.

Most of the time, those reddish or brownish acne marks that are left behind after pimples clear up will fade with no need for treatment but some lesions in some groups of people are more immunologically prone to scarring.

Acne scars take several forms:

  • Atrophic scars: Atrophic scars are flat, shallow depressions that heal below the top layer of skin.
  • Boxcar scars: Boxcar scars are broad, usually box-like depressions with sharply defined edges. Boxcar scars are caused by widespread acne, chickenpox, or varicella, a virus causing a red, itchy rash with blisters.

Several types of treatment can help like dermabression, subcision, filler injection, laser therapy, microneedling and chemical peeling but most of the cases requires combination therapy.

  • Ice pick scars: Ice pick scars are smaller, more narrow indentations that point down into the skin’s surface. These scars are common on the cheeks and tend to be very tough to treat, and often require persistent, aggressive treatment.
  • Rolling scars: Rolling scars have a varying depth, with sloping edges that make skin appear wavy and uneven.
  • Hypertrophic and keloid scars: Unlike atrophic hypertrophic and keloid scars form as raised lumps of scar tissue where the acne once was. This happens when scar tissue builds up, sometimes from previous acne spots. Hypertrophic scars are the same size as the acne that caused them. Keloid scars create a scar larger than the acne that caused them and grow beyond the sides of the original spot.

Treatments depend on how severe the scars are. Several types of treatment can help like dermabression, subcision, filler injection, laser therapy, microneedling and chemical peeling but most of the cases requires combination therapy.

He mentioned that most of acne scar patients due to deep scars have lost their deep layers tissues and their skin is very loose. Additionally aging makes the patients problem worse. Accordingly before scar treatment dermatologist should treat the laxity of the skin by hyalloronic acid and collagen induced fillers like ellanse and after a suitable time for collagen production then start to treat the scars.
