As Forrest Gump’s mom used to say: “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” And while that is truer than any of us would actually care to admit, you can at least make sure that you make the best of it. Since all of us are here for a good time, not a long time, you can at least try to live a fuller life and become as good of a person as you possibly can.
However, becoming a better person is not always as easy as it may sound. Simply due to the fact that all of us consider ourselves as good people as we are. So, how can you change something about yourself if you don’t think that the change is necessary? Here are just a few tips.
Love your stress
Since being stressed out can lead to increased levels of anger, you should do something about that as well.
Stress is a very powerful feeling that, unfortunately, all of us are very familiar with. However, we’re often not even aware of just how stressed out we truly are or just how negatively it is affecting us. That’s why you should first work on lowering your stress levels. There are many ways you can do so, from exercising regularly to spending more time doing the things you truly enjoy. But since being stressed out can lead to increased levels of anger, you should do something about that as well. If you feel like you’re getting angry easily, don’t allow it to taint your personal relationships. Instead, invest in a good punching bag and use that stress and anger in a positive manner. By doing so, not only will you feel better but you’ll also get a decent exercise out of it.
Become more mindful
Moreover, by embracing a more mindful mindset, you’ll generally become someone who is more fun to be around. What this means is that you should try to focus more on everything that’s going on around you. See which personal choices affect you the most and try to find a different way around them. Try to truly listen and understand people around you and see how you can help them. If you feel like your friends or family members could benefit from changing something about themselves – let them know. But try your best to do it in a mindful instead of a preachy manner.
Do more selfless acts
Next, if you wish to become a better person, you’ll have to stop putting yourself first. Instead, see how you can use your time and knowledge to help others. For instance, instead of wasting time just lounging around, you can use that time to make some changes. Visit your local support centers, public kitchens and charity organizations to see if they need any help. Spoiler alert: they always do. Choose to donate your time if you can’t help in any other way. This won’t make a huge difference in your daily life but it will surely mean a lot to someone.
Finally, one of the easiest things you can do if you are looking to become a better person is to be present. Nowadays, people are becoming more and more occupied with their smart devices, social media accounts and building their online personas that it seems that most of them are only truly present online. But you can choose to nurture and cherish interactions outside of social media and the internet. If you go visit your grandma, refrain from checking your phone every 10 minutes. If you’re out to grab a cup of coffee with your friend, ask them about what’s going on in their lives – and actually listen. Don’t grab your phone and escape into the online world as soon as the conversation is not going the way you’ve planned.
In order to live more fulfilling lives, all of us should work on improving ourselves. That’s the only way we can ensure that the time we have in this world is well spent. So, enjoy your life, do more good things and genuinely try to become the best version of yourself.
