Exercising and dieting is always easier when you have unlimited free time, but is much harder if you have to sit at a desk all day or are trapped indoors. Luckily for you, you can become healthier in the workplace by focusing not only on your personal state but also the state of your office or building. Here are five easy to follow tips and tricks to make the workplace healthier without needing to make drastic changes.

Invest in a Dehumidifier

The purpose of a dehumidifier is to remove unwanted moisture from the air. They are common throughout the United States in places like the southeast, where the environment tends to be hot and humid. They possess numerous benefits. By using a dehumidifier, you can make your workplace’s air less hospitable to allergens, mold spores, mildew, and other microscopic enemies that make it difficult to breathe or that can make you sick.

Depending on where you work, you can keep a portable dehumidifier on your desk, or even find one that you can bring with you anywhere. The important thing is to have a device that will purify and dry the air around you so you are less prone to allergies, coughs, nosebleeds, and other ailments.

Bring in the Plants

Believe it or not, but plants have been proven to have multiple effects in the workplace that are good news for you. These little green or blooming buds will become your best friends if you invest in a couple and keep them around your desk. One benefit is that plants improve the air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen cleansed by their root microbes.

Other benefits come from the human response to plants. At their core, humans are animals that are deeply affected by their surroundings. Have you ever noticed that you feel sadder or more depressed during overcast days? Does the lack of color stymy your thoughts? You wouldn’t be the only one. Adding plants to your workplace can actually improve your mood and creativity through their color and life, meaning it’s easier for you to make healthy choices and have a better outlook while in the workplace.

Switch to Natural Light

Fluorescent lights are awful for people. Although they are inexpensive and bright, their harsh unnaturally white light makes people uncomfortable and directly affects mood. They also stop people like yourself from getting the natural vitamin D and other benefits from plain sunlight. If you can, open up some windows in the workplace and rely less on artificial light. If this isn’t possible, switch out the fluorescent bulbs and replace them with softer, yellower lights.

This sounds simple but is something people forget. Instead of drinking coffee, soda, juice, and other sugary or caffeinated drinks, switch to plain old water. It’s better for you and will keep you hydrated and focused. If you don’t have an office water dispenser, keep some in your desk or cubicle so you have easy access to it. Your body will thank you.

It can be hard to stay healthy when you have to be at the workplace all day. So, why not make that environment healthier? These five tips, including diverse options like using a dehumidifier or getting some plants, will make your working happier, healthier, and more creative. Just don’t forget to take some breaks for yourself, and to perhaps drink more water and exercise a little bit when the workday is done. Your body will thank you for it all!
